Plot

Krrish serves as a thrilling continuation of the story from its predecessor, Koi... Mil Gaya. In this sequel, the focus shifts to Krishna Mehra, the son of the previous film's protagonists, Rohit and Nisha. Krishna, played by Hrithik Roshan, has inherited his father's extraordinary superhuman abilities.

The film begins with Krishna leading a private and hidden life in a small town, unaware of his true potential. When he meets Priyanka Chopra's character, Priya, a journalist, fate takes an unexpected turn. Priya, intrigued by Krishna's unique qualities, leaves for Singapore for her job, and Krishna decides to follow her, hoping to reunite with her.

Upon arriving in Singapore, Krishna realises the need to conceal his identity while using his powers to help others. He assumes the superhero persona of Krrish and uses his abilities to save a group of children trapped in a burning circus. His act of bravery earns him recognition as a superhero, and he becomes a symbol of hope and inspiration.

However, Krishna's journey as Krrish takes a dramatic turn when he uncovers the sinister plans of Dr Siddhant Arya. He is a genius with evil intentions and has a deep connection to Krishna's late father, Rohit Mehra. As Krishna delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Dr Arya, he discovers the truth about his father's past and his connection to the evil mastermind.

With the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, Krrish must embrace his powers fully and face off against Dr Arya, who poses a significant threat to humanity. Supported by his loyal friends and guided by his father's wisdom, Krrish battles against formidable odds to protect the world from the clutches of darkness.

Throughout the film, Krrish's love for Priya remains a driving force, adding an emotional layer to his journey. As he confronts his own identity and fights against evil, Krrish proves that true strength lies not only in physical powers but also in the purity of the heart and the power of love.

Release

Krrish hit theatres on 23 June 2006 with an amazing release of 1,000 prints. This wide distribution allowed the film to reach a vast audience across India and beyond. To further broaden its appeal, the movie was also released simultaneously with dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu, catering to regional audiences.

In addition to its thrilling superhero plot, the 2006 Bollywood blockbuster Krrish also garnered headlines for its enormous financial commitment and creative release strategy. With a final budget of ₹40 Crore, the film was considered a big-budget venture by Hindi film standards at that time.

One noteworthy aspect of the film's release strategy was its pioneering approach to financial arrangements. Krrish became the first Indian film to receive payments in advance for various aspects, including product placement, music, and international distribution rights.

Reviews

Krrish-Reviews-Image.tring.jpgKrrish garnered positive reviews from critics in India, receiving praise for its exciting superhero elements and compelling storyline.

Taran Adarsh, a renowned film critic at Bollywood Hungama, expressed that Krrish exceeded expectations but noted issues with the pacing in the first hour. Despite this, he praised the film as a "terrifically exciting and compelling experience." Adarsh awarded the film a rating of 4 out of 5 stars, acknowledging its overall impact and entertainment value.

On the other hand, Nikhat Kazmi from The Times of India had a more mixed response to the film. While Kazmi found the superhero and action sequences appealing, they felt that there weren't enough of them to sustain the film's momentum. They also expressed disappointment with the romantic parts. Overall, Kazmi stated that Krrish lacked the fun factor present in its predecessor.

These reviews highlight the divergence in opinions among critics regarding certain aspects of the movie. While the film received appreciation for its thrilling superhero elements and compelling narrative, criticisms were raised concerning pacing, the balance between action and romance, and the comparison to its predecessor.

Despite the mixed reception, Krrish went on to become a commercial success, captivating audiences with its groundbreaking special effects, charismatic performances, and storyline that explored the journey of a superhero.

Behind the Scenes

The making of the 2006 Bollywood film Krrish involved several noteworthy behind-the-scenes efforts to elevate the visual effects and shoot in an international location, showcasing the director Rakesh Roshan's ambition to set new standards in Indian cinema.

Roshan aimed to make Krrish a trendsetter by incorporating visual effects that rivalled those of Hollywood films. To achieve this, he enlisted the expertise of Hollywood special effects experts Marc Kolbe and Craig Mumma, renowned for their work on blockbuster films like Independence Day, Godzilla, and Sky Captain. Their involvement brought a wealth of experience and technical know-how to the project, ensuring that the visual effects in Krrish would be of international quality.

Additionally, the movie holds the distinction of being the first Indian film to be shot in Singapore under the Singapore Tourism Board's Film-in-Singapore subsidy scheme. This collaboration allowed the film's production to take advantage of the scenic locations and infrastructure offered by Singapore, providing a visually appealing backdrop for the story. With over 60% of the film being shot in Singapore, it showcased the city-state's beauty and served as a unique setting for the film's narrative.

The decision to employ Hollywood experts for visual effects and shoot extensively in Singapore demonstrated Rakesh Roshan's dedication to delivering a visually stunning and globally appealing film. These behind-the-scenes efforts contributed to the overall quality and international appeal of Krrish, showcasing the evolving production standards and collaborative spirit within the Indian film industry.

Controversy

The release of the film was not without its fair share of controversy and allegations of plagiarism. Just a few weeks before its release, the film's makers found themselves involved in a dispute with independent filmmaker and writer Ivan Rana, who accused them of stealing his story.

According to Rana, he had approached Rakesh Roshan back in 2003. He claimed to have presented his story, titled Superhero, along with character sketches to Roshan. After a meeting, Rana alleged that Roshan asked him to leave the concept with him. However, when Rana followed up a fortnight later, Roshan informed him that he did not wish to proceed with the idea. Subsequently, Rana left for the United States.

Upon returning, he discovered what he believed to be his stolen idea, claiming that even the design of the mask used in Krrish was his creation.

In response to these allegations, Rakesh Roshan clearly denied the accusations and asserted that he was the original creator of the Krrish story. He maintained that the script and concept had been independently developed by his team. Roshan defended his position, stating that the allegations of plagiarism were unfounded and baseless.

The controversy surrounding the alleged plagiarism added a layer of tension and uncertainty to the release of the movie.

The film set a new Indian record for its opening week, grossing ₹41.6 Crore (₹29.7 Crore nett). This remarkable start laid the foundation for its subsequent box office performance.

As the weeks went by, Krrish continued to attract audiences and garnered significant earnings. It became the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2006 in India, accumulating over ₹69 Crore nett domestically. The film's success was acknowledged by Box Office India, which classified it as a Blockbuster.
