A comedian or comic is someone who aims to make their audience laugh in order to amuse them. This may be accomplished through humorous events or jokes, acting stupidly, or through prop comedy. A stand-up comedian is a comedian who performs in front of an audience.

With its more unconventional and experimental tone, the alternative comedy movement has gained prominence since the 1980s. Typically, this entails reporting that is more experiential or observational.

Aristophanes, a humorous author and playwright, wrote early comedic plays about 425 BC, which is when comedians first appeared on the scene. Of the 40 comedies he penned, 11 are still being played today. Satyr plays were how Aristophanes' comedic flair was expressed.

From the 1880s until the 1930s, American vaudeville theatre saw the emergence of stand-up comedy, featuring performers like W. C. Fields, Buster Keaton, and the Marx Brothers.

A humorous monologue is spoken while standing on a stage in stand-up comedy.  Over the course of a nearly 80-year career that encompassed various comic film appearances over a five-decade span in radio, television, and entertaining military personnel through the USO, Bob Hope rose to become the most well-known stand-up comedian of the 20th century. Billy Connolly, George Carlin, Munawar Faruqui, Gabriel Iglesias, Parvinder Singh, and Dipoo Srivastava are a few other well-known stand-up comedians from around the world.

Bill Murray, Kiku Sharda, Gaurav Gera, and Tanmay Vekaria are examples of performers who began out as comedians and later developed their acting abilities to play comic roles in movies and TV Shows.

Comedy discussion shows where comedians parody the news or popular subjects are shown on television. Conan O'Brien, John Oliver, and David Letterman are a few examples of these comedians.
