Introduction 

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is an Indian Musical romance film. Written and directed by Karan Johar and produced by Dharma Productions. It brought the popular cast of Shah Rukh Khan at the time known as the king of romance, and Kajol working alongside each other. The film also featured Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji. The movie runs for a total of 185 mins. It was released on 16th October 1998. With a budget of 100 million dollars, the movie earned a whopping 1 billion dollars at the box office.

Plot

Rahul Khanna and Anjali Sharma are two friends who study in college. They are an unbreakable team that loves playing basketball. The duo is quite popular in college. Anjali is a tomboy who often beats Rahul at the game of basketball.  Rahul too plays basketball but can't beat Anjali without cheating in the game. The duo's friendship is tested when a new girl named Tina Malhotra is introduced in the picture. She befriends the duo and Rahul immediately falls head over heels for her. He tries various ways to woo her and impress her. This caused a drift between Anjali and Rahul and the two start growing apart.

Anjali soon realizes that she can't bear seeing Rahul and Tina together and also the fact that she has started to fall for Rahul. The situation turns drastic when one day Rahul asks Anjali if he should tell Tina how he feels about her. This was the very same day when Anjali too was planning to tell Rahul about how she felt about him. The situation leaves Anjali heartbroken and hurting. She changes colleges and eventually moves to another city to live. She breaks all ties with her former friend.

As time progresses Rahul professes his love to Tina and they go on to get married. The couple is blessed with a girl child named Anjali. Tina however dies due to complications during her pregnancy. Tina leaves behind a few letters for her child to read on each of her birthdays. Tina talks about Anjali in one of her letters. Anjali Khanna now lives with her widowed father Rahul. Tina in her letter requested Anjali to hatch a plan so that Rahul and Anjali can be reunited together, for Tina always knew about Anjali’s feelings for Rahul.

Anjali Sharma who now works as a music and dance teacher lives in Shimla while practicing her trade at a children's camp nearby. Anjali Khanna enlists herself as a student in the camp without getting permission from Rahul. She visits the camp with Rahul’s mother Savita Khanna. There she meets the woman her mother described as Anjali Sharma. She convinces her father Rahul to visit the camp and there he meets Anjali Sharma after a lifetime. Anjali Khanna devises a plan to reminiscence situations where both Anjali Sharma and Rahul would be able to associate and remember their college life.

Slowly as time passes the once college besties grow into lovers and the fire of love starts to cultivate within them. However, the trace is broken when Anjali Sharma’s fiancee Aman Mera arrives on the scene and Anjali returns home preparing for her wedding festivities.

The matter is complicated even further when Anjali Khanna shows Aman the letter in which her mother's request to bring Rahul and Anjali together is mentioned. Meanwhile, Rahul goes to meet Anjali and tells her about his feelings for her. At odds with the situation at hand but knowing she has to make a decision  Anjali walks down the stairs but stops in her tracks on seeing Rahul. Aman after hearing about the letters and thinking about the situation realizes that Anajli will always love Rahul and hence decides to call off the marriage and instead requests Rahul to Marry Anjali. Rahul and Anjali are finally reunited and the celebrations began. Rahul’s daughter Anjali Khanna is brimming with emotion having fulfilled her mother's request to reunite the long-lost lovers.

The movie was released on 16th October 1998. The movie was loved by the Indian audience who were won over by the story of the movie which was a melting pot of emotions, love, drama, comedy, and heartbreak. The movie grossed 1 billion dollars at the box office. The movie can be enjoyed on Netflix and also the video streaming app Youtube.

Reviews

Nikhat Kazmi of the Times Of India described the movie in a positive light saying that the movie resonated with the younger generation and had all the telltale signs of a love / romantic movie that the younger generation can relate to. She also said that Karan Johar made an excellent directorial debut with the movie. She gave the film a 3.5 out of 5 stars rating.

Anish Khanna of Planet Bollywood gave the movie a 9.3-star rating out of 10. He loved the cinematography and praised Karan Johar on his performance. He loved the chemistry of the main characters.

Sujata C J from Rediff.com penned a comment saying the movie was a disappointment and was based on a bad storyline.

Indian Wire on January 2023 ranked Kuch Kuch Hota Hai as one of the most watched romantic movies etched on the spot above Scott Pilgrim vs the world and just short of the number one romantic movie Notting Hill.

The filming for the movie began on 21st August 1997. Karan Johar while speaking to the cast and crew mentioned that he had little to no knowledge about how to go about directing the movie. The fact that this film went on to become a major box office hit was something that no one had expected as the cast was young and inexperienced. 

The title song was shot over a period of 10 days. The full movie was shot in many picturesque and vast locations filled with flora and fauna. The shooting was done in Scotland Ooty and Mauritius.

During the bicycle riding scene in the song, Yeh Ladka Hai Deewana Kajol lost control of the bike and fell face wards on the ground losing conscience. In the scene where Anjali and Rahul meet after an 8-year-long period the director asked them to redo the scene numerous times and secretly filmed them. He then put one of those scenes in the movies.

The movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai grossed over 1 billion dollars at the box office and was an instant hit among the fans who flocked to their nearest theaters to watch and enjoy the movie.

• The movie was made in nine and a half months. The cast and crew was inexperienced. 

• The movie was Karan Johar’s debut directorial movie.

• During the shooting of the movie, Kajol lost her balance and fell down. She became unconscious and had to be revived.

Rahul Khanna is best to Anjali Sharma. The duo is inseparable. Rahul Khanna is smart and very competitive. He often uses methods of deceit to win the game of basketball. He is smitten with the new student Tina Malhotra. Unknown to him his close friend Anjali holds a close palace for him in her heart. He tries to impress and woo Tina and in the process starts drawing farther from Anjali. 

Anjali Sharma though a girl has the personality of a tomboy. She is very talented and has mastered the game of basketball often beating her friend Rahul at the game. The duo starts parting away from each other when a new student named Tina Malhotra arrives. She watches in pain as Rahul tries to woo Tina. Eventually, she gets her heart broken and moves away. 

Tina is a new student in the school and on the first day meets the inseparable duo, Rahul and Anjali. Rahul falls head over heels for Tina and very soon Rahul tells Tina of his feelings for her. The couple gets married and has a girl named Anjali. Tina, unfortunately, passes away due to complications related to pregnancy. Her daughter Anjali Khanna devises a plan to get the long-lost lovers reunited in love.

The movie revolves around Rahul Khanna, Anjali Sharma, and Tina Malhotra. The movie talks about the love between Rahul and Tina Malhotra, with Anjali Sharma who is left on the sidelines looking on and realizing that she has started to fall in love with her best friend. The movie depicts the story of one-sided love and a love triangle. The movie also showcases the comic side of the friends in which the crazy cozy and close friendship between the duo Anjali and Rahul is tested with time and the introduction of another person. The movie has a touch of everything that resonated with the audience.
