Mahadevan entered the music industry after working for Leading Edge Systems (now Trigyn Technologies Limited).

Mahadevan's mix of Carnatic, Hindustani, and Jazz earned him early success as an indie pop singer. In 1998 India's one of the most iconic songs were created by Shankar, the non-film album Breathless reached the top of the Indian music charts. He has composed and sung more than over 7000 songs. His songs are relished by most Indians. He has sung in movies like Kal Ho na Ho, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Don 2, 2 States, Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, Mitwaa, etc, to name a few.

In 2000, he was rewarded with the National Film Award for Best Male Playback singer, for the song Yenna Solla Pogirai from the Tamil movie Kandukondain Kandukondain. Was always awarded in 2007 for exceptional contribution to Indian cinema music was the Swaralaya-Kairali-Yesudas Award.\\\"Maa\\\" won the National Film Award in 2007 for Best Male Playback Singer (Taare Zameen Par). Later in 2008: \\\"Kalyana Kacheri\\\" won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer (Madampi).In 2009: \\\"Pichavecha Naal\\\" won the Asianet Film Award for Best Male Playback (Puthiya Mukham) with theAnnual Malayalam Movie Awards in Dubai for \\\"Pichavecha Naal\\\" as Best Male Singer (Puthiya Mukham). 

In the year 2011 Andhra Pradesh's government presented the Lata Mangeshkar Award and earned \\\"Indhumukhi Varumo\\\" won the Kerala Film Critics Award for Best Male Playback Singer (Holidays) Nee Dookudu won the 2012 MAA Music Award for Best Male Playback Singer (Dookudu).2015 Tulu Cinemotsava Awards for Rikshaw Driver (Tulu MovieBest )'s Playback Singer. At an investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on March 11, 2019, the President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, presented Shri Shankar Mahadevan with the Padma Shree Award, which he later received for his services to film music under the area of the arts.
