Fanaa is a 2006 romantic thriller film directed by Kunal Kohli and produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra through their production company Yash Raj Films. Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Tabu, and Sharat Saxena play supporting roles alongside Aamir Khan and Kajol.

Khan's second anti-hero picture after 1947 Earth, Fanaa follows Rehan Qadri, a tourist guide in New Delhi, who meets Zooni Ali Beg, a Kashmiri woman. Both fall in love but are torn apart by a terrorist attack that allegedly kills Rehan. Later, it is revealed that he was not murdered, but is a Kashmiri rebel who masterminded the attacks. Seven years later, his organisation, known as the ‘IKF,’ sends him on a mission to Kashmir, where he meets Zooni again in a weird twist of fate.

Fanaa was one of the most expensive Bollywood films released at the time. The title of the picture is inspired from the Islamic Sufi phrase 'Fanaa,' which means 'destruction' in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Hindi. 'Destroyed In Love' was the film's tagline. This was Khan and Kajol's first romantic pairing, but it was their second collaboration after Ishq (1997), in which they were placed opposite Juhi Chawla and Ajay Devgn, respectively. It also marked Kajol's comeback after her appearance in Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Fanaa was released on May 26, 2006, and grossed over $1.03 billion at the box office against a $300 million production and marketing budget, making it the sixth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2006. Despite being prohibited in the state of Gujarat due to protests to Khan's comments criticising the Gujarat administration, the film was a huge commercial success. 'Fanaa' is a love drama set in Kashmir's picturesque valley. Rehan Qadri (Aamir Khan) and Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) are the two main characters in the film.

Zooni Ali Beg, a young, self-sufficient blind girl, travels to Kashmir with her friends and family. She meets Rehan, a beautiful and dynamic tour guide on her journey. Zooni's innocence and beauty captivate Rehan, and he shows her Kashmir's true essence.

As Rehan spends more time with Zooni, their friendship blossoms into love. For the first time, Zooni feels the delight and excitement of falling in love. Rehan is hiding a dark secret. He is a member of a terrorist organisation planning a huge strike. Zooni is put in danger because of his involvement in the mission, even if she is unaware of his true motives.

Rehan struggles with his mixed emotions as their love grows. He is caught between his feelings for Zooni and his commitment to his mission. He is well aware that his activities will ultimately affect Zooni and her loved ones. Despite his mental anguish, Rehan keeps his true identity and ambitions hidden from Zooni.

When Zooni's family learns about her relationship with Rehan, they show their anxiety and disapproval due to rumours regarding Rehan's strange past. Zooni, on the other hand, remains loyal in her love for him and defends him against all difficulties.

As the planned terrorist strike approaches, Rehan realises the seriousness of his actions and the risk he is putting Zooni in. He decides to give up his happiness for her protection and abandons her without explanation.

Zooni is heartbroken and saddened by the sudden absence of her life's love. She mourns for Rehan and tries to move on, but her love for him endures.

Years later, Zooni, now married and with a child, meets a man named Naveen (also played by Aamir Khan) who resembles Rehan. Naveen, actually Rehan, has lost his memories due to a brain injury. Zooni accepts him into her house, hoping to reignite the lost love and heal his memories.

The plot takes a dramatic turn as Rehan gradually regains his memories and his history catches up with him. Zooni is confronted with the reality of Rehan's identity and past acts. The film finishes in a thrilling climax that closes their love story.

Character Analysis

Rehan Qadri (Aamir Khan)
