Mahalakshmi Iyer is an Indian Singer. She has also performed in several other Indian languages, including Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Odia, Gujarati, and Kannada.
Mahalakshmi Iyer made her playback debut in 1997 with the film Dus, which was never completed and released owing to the tragic death of the film's director. The record, however, was published as a tribute in 1999. She performed Ae Ajnabee for A. R. Rahman in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se alongside Udit Narayan, which was her maiden release as a playback vocalist and deemed her debut. Mahalakshmi Iyer continues to sing for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and A.R. Rahman in many subsequent films.
She has also sung several serials, jingles, and original albums since then. She was a part of numerous popular soundtracks, including Mission Kashmir, Yaadein, and Saathiya, and collaborated with A. R. Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Nadeem-Shravan, Jatin-Lalit, and others.
She has performed on several of Yash Raj Films' biggest successes, including Dhoom 2, Bunty Aur Babli, Salaam Namaste, Fanaa, Ta Ra Rum Pum, and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
She is well-known for her voice in songs such as "Kabhi Sham Dhale" from Sur - The Melody of Life (2002), "Har Taraf" from Rishtey (2002), and hit songs such as "Chup Chup Ke" from Bunty Aur Babli (2005), "Aaj Ki Raat" from Don: The Chase Begins Again (2006), and "Bol Na Halke Halke" from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
In the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), she has sung the Academy Award-winning song "Jai Ho" for A. R. Rahman. She sang the Hindi words in between the brief "Jai Ho" chants, as well as sections of the lyrics (the majority of which were sung by Sukhwinder Singh).
In the past, she sang backing vocals for Pankaj Udhas's popular Ghazal Aur Ahistaa. She has also contributed her voice to a number of private album remixes, including Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar and Baahon Mein Chali Aao, both of which were originally performed by the Legendary Lata Mangeshk
