Plot

Farzi is an Indian Hindi-language black comedy crime thriller television series created, produced, and directed by Raj & DK, who also co-wrote the series with Sita Menon and Suman Kumar. The series stars Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Kay Kay Menon, Raashii Khanna, and Bhuvan Arora. It follows the story of a disillusioned artist named Sunny who decides to make counterfeit money along with his best friend, Firoz.

Sunny is distressed by the income inequality in India and fails to keep his grandfather's revolutionary printing press in business. The duo ventures into the world of fake currency, facing challenges from Mansoor, a gangster, and Michael, a cop. Michael sets up the Counterfeiting and Currency Fraud Analysis and Research Team (CCFART) with Megha, an idealistic officer from the Reserve Bank of India.

Impressed by Sunny's forgery skills, Mansoor kidnaps him and Firoz to make counterfeit money for his crime organization. Sunny infiltrates CCFART by getting close to Megha and spying on the team through her phone. Meanwhile, Michael gets information from a mole in Mansoor's organization and a thrilling cat-and-mouse game ensues.

Mansoor orchestrates a plan to smuggle ₹12,000 crores in counterfeit notes into India using a Trojan Horse scheme, and Sunny plays a pivotal role in deceiving Michael and successfully smuggling the cash. The duo enjoys their newfound wealth, and Sunny begins to fall for Megha, removing the tracker from her phone.

As Michael, Megha, and the CCFART team come closer to uncovering Sunny's identity and operation, Sunny and Firoz scatter fake cash on the streets to escape a police chase. Angered by their actions, Mansoor orders Sunny and Firoz to be killed, but they manage to escape. Mansoor also sets fire to Madhav's printing press, seemingly killing him. In retaliation, Sunny goes on a rampage, killing many of Mansoor's men, and setting fire to the counterfeit cash, promising to return for more.

CCFART	Through Gahlot's assistance, Michael establishes the Counterfeiting and Currency Fraud Analysis and Research Team (CCFART), the task force he desired. He has a tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife, Rekha, and their son. Megha, who is unhappy with her work at the RBI, joins Michael's team. She quickly gets into difficulty when she refuses to examine the artist whose false note she discovered and nearly blows up their business. Meanwhile, Sunny and Firoz are hired to print counterfeit money for a politician, and they end up delivering a 20 crore package to Surat themselves.
Dhanrakshak	Rekha sends Michael divorce papers. Megha's fake note scanner, Dhanrakshak, is launched by Gahlot, who believes the media attention will help him win the election. Meanwhile, Madhav suffers from dementia. Mansoor is rattled by the arrests due to Dhanrakshak. Impressed by Sunny's artistry (Dhanrakshak cannot detect his notes), Mansoor kidnaps him and Firoz, and makes Sunny an offer to work for his crime organisation.
Second Oldest Profession	Sunny agrees to start working for Mansoor, and produces a fake 2000- rupee note at his lab in Jordan. Mansoor arranges a neuro specialist and pays for Madhav's surgery. In Bangladesh, Mansoor's henchman Bilal is caught by Michael and team. Michael threatens Bilal and turns him into an informant. Back in Mumbai, Sunny is asked by Mansoor to infiltrate CCFART. He stages a meeting with Megha, and manages to hack into her phone.
Cat and Mouse	Sunny spies on CCFART's plans through Megha's phone. Michael gets information from Bilal, and another mole in Mansoor's organisation. Following a cat and mouse game between the two organisations, Mansoor suggests a Trojan Horse plan to smuggle ₹12,000 crores in counterfeit notes into India. With help from a Russian boat crew, Sunny manages to trick Michael, successfully smuggling the cash.
Supernote	Sunny and Firoz enjoy their wealth, and move into plush flats. Sunny finds himself falling for Megha, and removes the tracker from her phone. Megha discovers that the artist is leaving his signature (S) in the fake notes. Mansoor is desperate to get the fake cash into the market, and urges Sunny to act quickly. Michael devises a plan to lure the artist.
Crash and Burn	Sunny and Firoz almost get caught, but Michael manages to see their faces. To escape from the cops during a chase, Sunny and Firoz scatter the fake cash into the streets. Displeased by this, Mansoor orders for them to be killed, but Sunny uses the help of his friends to escape. Mansoor sets fire to Madhav's printing press, seemingly killing him. Angered, Sunny goes on a rampage -he kills many of Mansoor's men and sets fire to the cash, promising Mansoor that he will be back for more. Meanwhile, Michael and Rekha get divorced. Megha is close to uncovering Sunny's identity.

Shahid Kapoor as Sunny

Sunny (Shahid Kapoor) adores his grandfather, an elderly journalist who is clinging to Kranti, a revolutionary magazine that no one wants to buy. Amol Palekar portrays this stately, forgetful grandmother who suspects his grandchild is up to no good. You're not doing anything wrong, are you? he asks Sunny from time to time, and the latter assures him that he isn't. But, although Kranti magazine and its geriatric staff are trapped in a time warp, the world outside has morphed into a different beast - one that Sunny and his closest friend Firoz (Bhuvan Arora) are trying to tame. They no longer want to be the middle finger class.

Michael Vedanayagam (Vijay Sethupathi) is a Tamilian living in Mumbai who is married to Rekha Rao (Regina Cassandra), a Telugu woman who is tired of his work baggage. It's strange to hear Sethupathi speak in Hindi at first because his dialogue delivery in Tamil is so memorable that the Hindi sounds significantly less spontaneous. However, after a few episodes, the awkwardness grows on you.

Behind the scenes

Farzi was previously conceptualised as a film by Raj & DK in 2014, starring Shahid Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. By the end of the year, Kriti Sanon had joined the cast. It was expanded into a television series in 2019, with Kapoor still involved. Raashii Khanna joined the project in January 2021, according to Kapoor. The concept of making of the series is unique, and something that has not been seen in any web series.

Bhuvan Arora said in September 2021 that he was working on the series. When Raj and DK were filming The Family Man in Chennai, they gave Vijay Sethupathi a part; he joined the production 40 days later. He complimented his co-star Raashi Khanna, with whom he had previously worked in Tamil films, for making him feel at ease on set.

In July 2021, principal photography began at Film City in Mumbai. There was also filming in Goa, Alibaug, Nepal, and Jordan. Pankaj Kumar was the film's cinematographer.

Amazon formally revealed the series on April 28, 2022, during the debut exhibition of 40 Indian projects sanctioned by the business. The cast includes Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Raashii Khanna, Kay Kay Menon, Regina Cassandra, Zakir Hussain, Bhuvan Arora, Amol Palekar, and Kubbra Sait.
