Plot

The story revolves around a dynamic and idealistic social activist named Shalini, who is fighting against a powerful multinational corporation trying to build a mega shopping mall project in the heart of the city. Shalini strongly believes that this project will displace thousands of slum dwellers and destroy the cultural heritage of the area.

Helping Shalini in her quest is Krishnan, a street-smart videographer and aspiring journalist. Krishnan is determined to expose the truth and bring justice to the affected people. Together, they join forces with Dr. Ahmedi, a righteous and honest bureaucrat who holds a high-ranking position in the government.

As Shalini, Krishnan, and Dr. Ahmedi dig deeper, they uncover a web of deceit, political conspiracies, and dark secrets that involve powerful politicians, influential businessmen, and even the media. They realize that the mega shopping mall project is just the tip of the iceberg and that there is a far more sinister plot at play.

As the story unfolds, Shalini, Krishnan, and Dr. Ahmedi discover evidence of a high-level government cover-up that implicates several influential figures. They are determined to expose the truth, even if it means putting their lives on the line.

The climax of the film takes place during a public rally, where Shalini, Krishnan, and Dr. Ahmedi reveal the shocking truth to the masses. The rally turns into a battleground as the corrupt politicians and their henchmen attempt to silence them. In a thrilling climax filled with action and suspense, the protagonists fight against all odds to ensure that justice prevails.

Reviews

abhay deol and emraan hashmi in shanghai 2012One of the film's greatest strengths is its ability to keep the audience on the edge of their seats throughout its runtime. The screenplay, written by Urmi Juvekar, is tightly woven, filled with suspenseful twists and turns that continuously raise the stakes. The pacing is brisk, allowing the plot to unfold gradually and effectively maintain the tension. Each scene carries a sense of urgency, driving the narrative forward and keeping viewers engaged.

The performances in Shanghai are exceptional, with the cast delivering nuanced portrayals of their characters. Abhay Deol shines as Krishnan, capturing the essence of a principled man battling against a corrupt system. Kalki Koechlin brings intensity and vulnerability to her role as Shalini, effectively portraying her determination and emotional turmoil. Emraan Hashmi surprises with his restrained yet impactful portrayal of Jogi, adding depth to his character. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, adding another layer of authenticity to the film.

Director Dibakar Banerjee deserves accolades for his skillful execution of the film's visuals and overall atmosphere. The cinematography by Nikos Andritsakis is top-notch, capturing the gritty and chaotic nature of Bharat Nagar while also highlighting its contrasting beauty. The use of dimly lit streets, bustling markets, and cramped alleys adds to the sense of realism and enhances the film's noirish feel.

According to Shubra Gupta (top critic) from the Indian Express, the movie is good. Except for the distance where Banerji telegraphs some of his punches, the majority of it is frightfully plausible, acutely observed, and acutely executed. As a result, Shanghai falls just short of being truly fantastic.

The audience gave a score of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes for Shanghai.
