She began her career in the film industry as an assistant director, working on movies like Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), Mary Kom (2014), Bajirao Mastani (2015), and Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). Sharmin made her acting debut with the film Malaal in 2019, which earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She also appeared in the film Atithi Bhooto Bhava in 2022.

In a 2019 interview, Sharmin Segal candidly shared her experience of being fat-shamed during her teenage years. She revealed that she struggled with being overweight and faced teasing and ridicule in school until she completed her education. Reflecting on the current trend of promoting body positivity, she acknowledged that she had been a victim of bullying for over 15 years, which had greatly affected her self-confidence.

 In 2022, she appeared as an air hostess named Netra Banerjee opposite Pratik Gandhi in the ZEE5 film Atithi Bhooto Bhava. Malaal

 PlayMalaal is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Mangesh Hadawale and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bhushan Kumar, Mahaveer Jain, and Krishan Kumar. It marked Hadawale's directorial debut in Hindi cinema. The film is a remake of the 2004 Tamil-Telugu bilingual film 7G Rainbow Colony directed by Selvaraghavan.

Malaal tells the story of Astha Tripathi and Shiva More, portrayed by debutants Sharmin Segal and Meezaan Jafri, respectively. The characters come from different backgrounds and reside in a Mumbai chawl. The film explores their contemporary love story and the challenges they face due to their contrasting lives. Malaal was released in Indian theaters on July 5, 2019.

 Gangubai Kathiawadi

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the director and producer of the 2022 Hindi-language biographical crime drama movie Gangubai Kathiawadi. The movie features Alia Bhatt in the titular role, with Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, Varun Kapoor, and Jim Sarbh also in the cast. Ajay Devgn appears in an extended cameo.

The film revolves around the life of Gangubai Kothewali, whose story was documented in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S. Hussain Zaidi. It portrays the journey of a simple girl from Kathiawad who, due to circumstances, finds herself involved in the world of crime and eventually uses it to her advantage.

Gangubai Kathiawadi premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 16, 2022, and was subsequently released in theaters on February 25, 2022. The film garnered critical acclaim for its themes, direction, production values, and Alia Bhatt's performance. It achieved commercial success, grossing ₹153.69 crore domestically and ₹209.77 crore globally.

The film received numerous accolades and was featured on several year-end lists for its exceptional quality and Bhatt's portrayal. At the 68th Filmfare Awards, it received 15 nominations and won 10 awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress for Alia Bhatt.

 Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

Ram-Leela also referred to as Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, is a 2013 Hindi-language romantic action-drama movie from India. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who also wrote and directed the movie, also created the soundtrack for it. Bhansali and Kishore Lulla of Eros International co-produced the film.

Ram-Leela stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes Supriya Pathak, Richa Chadda, Sharad Kelkar, Gulshan Devaiah, Barkha Bisht Sengupta, and Abhimanyu Singh. Priyanka Chopra also made a cameo appearance in the song Ram Chahe Leela.

The film is based on the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. It narrates the tale of two lovers, Ram and Leela, who belong to feuding gangster families. Despite their families' long-standing rivalry, Ram and Leela fall in love with each other. However, their love faces numerous obstacles and they are torn apart.

Ram-Leela was noted for its vibrant visuals, intense performances, and a memorable soundtrack.
