Dangal Plot
Mahavir Singh Phogat, a national wrestling champion from Balali, Haryana, is a former amateur wrestler who was trained in the pehlwani style of Indian wrestling. His father forces him to give up the sport in order for him to find work. He vows on his unborn baby that if he does not win a medal for his country, he will. He gives up hope after being dissatisfied with his four daughters. When his older daughters, Geeta and Babita, return home after thrashing two boys in retaliation to disparaging remarks, dad recognises their wrestling potential and begins coaching them.
His tactics appear to be harsh, with early morning workouts and short, forced haircuts. Despite the locals' opposition, he continues with them, training them in his homemade mud pit. The daughters initially resent their father's treatment, but they quickly realise that he is concerned about their future. They willingly join in wrestling events, where they defeat boys. Mahavir utilises mattresses and trains them in freestyle wrestling to prepare them for competitive tournaments because he cannot afford wrestling mats. Geeta goes on to win state and national junior and senior titles before travelling to the National Sports Academy in Patiala to prepare for the Commonwealth Games. What happens from here forms the crux of this masterpiece of a biopic and deserves to be watched by everyone to witness the portrayal of true grit and determination.
