The show was created by Sameer Nair's programming team to air on Star Plus for its first three seasons, which ran from 2000 to 2007 and took place between the years of 2000 and 2007. Since 2010, it has been broadcast on Sony Entertainment Television, and BIG Synergy has been the show's producer from the first season through the tenth season. After that, the production companies that are credited with co-producing are Studio NEXT since season 10 and Tree of Knowledge since season 11, respectively. Both organisations began to collaborate with the show after season 10.

Amitabh Bachchan presented the KBC for the first time on Indian television on July 3, 2000. KBC at first provided participants with the opportunity to win Rs. 1 Crore.
After a four-year break, the programme returned on August 5, 2005, and was given the new moniker Kaun Banega Crorepati Dwitiya, or KBC 2. The top reward for this season was doubled to Rs. 2 Crore.
When Bachchan declined to host the third season of the TV show, Star Television hired Shah Rukh Khan. The top award was still Rs. 2 crore. The third season of the show debuted on January 22, 2007.
After a break of three and a half years, the show was resumed. Amitabh Bachchan, who was back, presented the fourth season, which debuted on October 11, 2010. Four days a week, Monday through Thursday evenings, this season was shown on television.
The fifth season, which began on August 15, 2011, Indian Independence Day, and finished on November 17, 2011, was once again hosted by Amitabh Bachchan. Four days a week it was broadcast once more.
On May 28, 2012, the season's registration opened. Amitabh Bachchan served as host for this sixth season, which debuted on September 7, 2012. On Sony TV, it ran every Friday through Sunday nights.
Seekhna Bandh Toh Jeetna Bandh served as the season's tagline for the seventh season, which Bachchan again hosted. There have been seven crores in total reward money, and there are fifteen instead of thirteen questions. The beginning of the season started on September 6, 2013.
This season's ultimate winning prize was also 7 crore. KBC 8 registration opened on July 22, 2014, and filming began on August 2.
After a three-year hiatus, Sony TV's KBC made a comeback on August 28, 2017, with Bachchan resuming hosting duties. Monday through Friday at 9:00 p.m., the show aired on Sony.
The show's registration period began on June 6 and it began running on Sony TV on September 3. The Ask The Expert lifeline took the place of the Phone-a-Friend lifeline during this particular season.
Season 11 of KBC premiered on Sony TV on 19 August 2019, with Bachchan resuming hosting duties. The show aired on weeknights from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 pm IST, with Karamveer Special episodes airing every Friday until 11 p.m. IST
The audition procedure for season 12 will take place from May 9 to May 23, according to a brief video posted to social media by Sony TV on May 2, 2020, including Bachchan. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay in production and broadcast. The shooting started on September 7. Bachchan updated his official Twitter account with the first image of the revised set. Jo bhi ho, har setback ka jawab comeback se do was the tagline used for the season 12 premiere, which aired on September 28.
Registrations for the next 13th season of the show opened on May 10, 2021. The digital audition model was maintained, and the process was broken down into four phases: registration, screening, online audition, and personal interview. On August 28, the show made its debut on the Sony TV channel and SonyLIV app.
The first episode of Season 14 aired on August 7, 2022, a Sunday. This season's Triple Test was maintained, while the number of lifelines was decreased from four to three. The expert advice and flip the question lifelines were eliminated, and their replacements were video call a friend. The question count has gone up to 17.
