The story unfolds as young Vijay and Ravi witness the tragic death of their father, a laborer, due to unfair treatment by his employer. This incident has a deep impact on their lives, shaping their contrasting paths. While Ravi grows up to become an honest police officer, Vijay, driven by the harsh realities of life, turns to a life of crime and becomes a prominent underworld figure.

As the brothers find themselves on opposite sides of the law, their relationship becomes strained. Ravi, bound by his duty as a police officer, is determined to apprehend his own brother, leading to intense emotional conflicts. Meanwhile, Vijay's meteoric rise in the criminal world catches the attention of a powerful gangster, Samant, played by Madan Puri.

The plot thickens when Vijay falls in love with Anita, portrayed by Parveen Babi. Their relationship adds a layer of complexity to Vijay's life as he grapples with the consequences of his choices and the impact they have on those he cares about.

As the tension between the brothers escalates, Deewar reaches its climax in a gripping confrontation that forces them to confront their past, their choices, and the ultimate question of right and wrong.

Deewar, the highly anticipated Bollywood film, made its theatrical release on January 24, 1975, marking a significant moment in the history of Indian cinema.

Deewar arrived at a time when the Indian film industry was undergoing a transformation. The '70s witnessed a shift in storytelling, with a departure from the traditional melodramatic narratives to more realistic and socially relevant themes. Deewar embraced this change and captured the attention of audiences with its gritty portrayal of Mumbai's underworld and its exploration of complex moral dilemmas.

One of the film's notable aspects was the iconic confrontation scene between Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor, which featured the memorable dialogue, "Mere paas maa hai". This line became immensely popular and has since become a part of Indian cinematic folklore.

Deewar, the cinematic gem that graced the silver screen on January 24, 1975, continues to stand as a timeless masterpiece that has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Directed by Yash Chopra and penned by the creative duo Salim-Javed, this film effortlessly weaves together elements of drama, action, and emotion to create an immersive cinematic experience.

One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its compelling screenplay, crafted with finesse by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. The dialogues, in particular, resonate with profound depth, leaving a lasting impact on the viewer's mind. The line, "Mere paas maa hai," delivered with raw intensity, has become an immortalized piece of cinematic history.

The performances in Deewar are nothing short of extraordinary. Amitabh Bachchan's portrayal of Vijay, the brooding and conflicted anti-hero, showcases his immense talent and establishes him as a force to be reckoned with. Shashi Kapoor's nuanced portrayal of Ravi, torn between duty and family, is equally impressive, adding layers of emotional depth to the narrative.

Yash Chopra's directorial talent shines throughout the film, with his keen eye for capturing the essence of Mumbai's energetic and active streets juxtaposed with the characters' inner turmoil.

Deewar's impact extends beyond its release, as it remains relevant even in contemporary times. The themes of morality, loyalty, and the struggle for survival resonate with audiences across generations, making it a true testament to the power of storytelling.

Furthermore, the film's soul-stirring soundtrack, composed by R.D. Burman, adds another layer of brilliance to the overall experience. Deewar, released in 1975, stands tall as an exceptional cinematic creation. Its release marked a turning point in Indian cinema, redefining storytelling and establishing new benchmarks for future films. With its superb performances, engaging screenplay, and thought-provoking narrative, Deewar remains a timeless masterpiece.

Behind the Scenes

Amitabh Bachchan's character is based on Karna, while Shashi Kapoor is based on Yudhisthira from the Mahabharata. Dilip Kumar's furious performance as Gunga in Gunga Jumna inspired Amitabh’s angry young man portrayal as Vijay in the film, which Bachchan sharpened and reworked in a contemporary urban setting reflecting the evolving socio-political climate of 1970s India.

Bachchan had some input on Chopra's direction in select situations, like as the father's funeral scene, when Bachchan recommends using his left hand to burn the pyre and show off the tattoo "Mera baap chor hai". Because Bachchan was working on Ramesh Sippy's Sholay at the same time, most of the film was shot at night.

In a fight scene in the movie, Bachchan does some martial arts moves that were inspired by Hong Kong martial arts movies.

Box Office Collection

The movie earned a total of ₹75 million (about $9 million) from theatres in India. Deewaar was a commercial and critical success upon its release, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1975. Critics praised the story, dialogue, screenplay, and performances of the cast, notably those of Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, and Nirupa Roy.
