The film was produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur for UTV Motion Pictures and The Walt Disney Company India, along with Sunita Gowariker for Ashutosh Gowariker Productions (AGPPL). The leading roles are portrayed by Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde.

The movie presents a cinematic representation of the ancient Indus Valley civilization, with a focus on the city of Mohenjo-daro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set in 2016 BC during the peak of the Indus Valley Civilization, the story revolves around a farmer named Sarman (Hrithik Roshan), who travels to the city of Mohenjo Daro and falls in love with a woman from a high-status background (Pooja Hegde). Interestingly, Mohenjo Daro marked the final film production of UTV Motion Pictures. Subsequent to this release, Siddharth Roy Kapur's contract with the company lapsed on 1 January 2017, and the two Disney films, Dangal and Jagga Jasoos, were his final projects under the Disney·UTV brand. Although the non-Hindi versions of these films were presented by the banner, Jagga Jasoos faced delays before its release in mid-July 2017.
