Introduction

Nishikant Kamat is the director of the 2015 Hindi-language crime thriller movie Drishyam. It is an adaptation of the Malayalam movie Drishyam from 2013. Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, and Rishab Chadha all appear in the movie. After its release on July 31, 2015, it became a critical and financial triumph, grossing more than 111 crores globally. In 2022, a follow-up entitled Drishyam 2 was released. Later that year, the movie's release in China brought in $4.05 million, bringing its overall gross to over 147 crores.

Following the phenomenal success of the Drishyam sequel to the original Malayalam film, which debuted in February 2021, a sequel was both confirmed and announced. After Nishikant Kamat passed away in August 2020, producer Kumar Mangat Pathak's son, Abhishek Pathak, took over the reins as director of the remade sequel.

The whole prequel ensemble, including Ashley Nand, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Mrunal Jadhav, and Rajat Kapoor, would return for the remade sequel known as Drishyam 2, together with Akshaye Khanna and Saurabh Shukla. On November 18, 2022, it made its theatrical premiere across the world.

Story

Drishyam is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language crime drama film. The film follows the story of Vijay Salgaonkar, a cable operator and film buff who lives in Goa with his wife and two daughters. One day, when his younger daughter accidentally kills a wealthy man's son while trying to protect herself from his advances, Vijay and his family are thrust into a crisis.

To protect his family, Vijay comes up with a plan to cover up the crime and keep the police from discovering the truth. Despite intense pressure from the police and the victim's family, Vijay manages to maintain his composure and keep his secret, using his vast knowledge of films and clever thinking to outwit the authorities. However, as the investigation continues and the stakes become higher, Vijay must fight to protect his family and preserve their freedom.

Throughout the film, Vijay's love for his family and his determination to protect them drive the plot, leading to a suspenseful and dramatic conclusion. With twists and turns that keep the audience on the edge of their seats, Drishyam is a gripping tale of crime and punishment, and the lengths a father will go to protect his loved ones.

Release Date

Drishyam is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language crime drama film directed by Nishikant Kamat. The film was initially released in theatres but later became available on various OTT (Over-the-top) platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, among others. Drishyam was released on 31 July 2015 on 2,365 screens in India.

OTT platforms have revolutionised the way people consume media, allowing them to watch movies and TV shows anytime, anywhere, and on any device. This has resulted in a wider reach and accessibility of movies, making them available to a larger audience.

Reviews

The movie received four out of five stars from Meena Iyer of The Times of India, who called it "A suspense drama with a nail-biting finish." Iyer critiqued the Salgaonkar family's casting decisions but commended Devgn and Tabu's performances, saying, "Ajay, who is the victim in this scene, shines in his part as the protective father... Tabu is terrific as his predator." The movie received a three-and-a-half out of five-star rating from Rohit Vats of the Hindustan Times, who called it "Stunning, riveting, edge-of-the-seat, startling, and absorbing." Vats lauded the movie for being a suspense thriller success.

Behind the scenes

It was revealed in October 2014 that Saif Ali Khan would take up the lead role from Mohanlal, who had previously performed the part in the 2013 Malayalam precursor. In November 2014, it was revealed that Ajay Devgn would play the lead in the Hindi version of the 2013 film Drishyam, which would be made by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures in collaboration with Panorama Studios and directed by Nishikant Kamat.

There were also rumours that Akshay Kumar would play the lead. The idea was for Devgn to take on Mohanlal's 2013 movie character once more. Later, it was revealed that Shriya Saran would play the character's wife in place of Ajay Devgn's character's wife, Meera Deshmukh, who will be played by Tabu. The movie's main shooting was supposed to start in February 2015. Viacom 18 Motion Pictures' Chief Operating Officer, Ajit Andhare, said "A legendary movie, Drishyam captivates and intrigues you long after you've seen it. Its success at the box office in Telugu and Malayalam speaks for itself." Actor Ajay Devgn was in Canada to film snow scenes for his forthcoming movie Shivaay, but because of the mild snowfall, he had to reschedule that movie and fly back to India to start work on Drishyam.

Movie Controversy

Filmmaker Ekta Kapoor addressed a legal warning to the Malayalam filmmakers upon the news of the Hindi adaptation. The Devotion of Suspect X, written by Japanese author Keigo Higashino, was purchased by Ekta Kapoor for the screen, and according to her legal team, Drishyam is a movie adaptation of the book. Jeethu Joseph, the original Drishyam director and screenwriter, refuted claims that his movie is a parody or adaptation of the Japanese book and movie.

According to commentator Nandini Ramnath, Jeethu Joseph's accomplishment is in taking an intelligent notion and localising it so skillfully that the connections (to the Japanese novel) appear shaky unless carefully studied. This is similar to the plot of the inside movie. The director of Drishyam has an alibi that is almost as convincing as the one Ishigami fabricates for Yasuko and Misato. Drishyam is the ideal crime about a perfect crime.

Box Office Collection

Drishyam made roughly 463 million (US$5.8 million) at the conclusion of its first week. By the end of its run, it had earned a total of INR 91.97 crore ($12 million) at the Indian box office. The movie made 155 million (US$1.9 million) abroad in seven weeks, bringing its total worldwide earnings to 1.1 billion INR (US$14 million). A movie was released in China in 2022, earning $30k USD on day one and $4.05 million during its entire run, for a global total gross of $1.47 billion.
