Gangubai Kathiawadi Overview

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the director and producer of the 2022 Hindi-language biographical crime drama movie Gangubai Kathiawadi. Ajay Devgn, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, and Varun Kapoor also play significant roles in the movie, which also stars Alia Bhatt as the title character. 

The movie is partially inspired on the biography of Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi, also known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose narrative was chronicled in S. Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. A modest girl from Kathiawad who had no choice but to accept destiny's ways and make it work in her favour is portrayed rising to prominence in the movie. 72nd Berlin International Film Festival was where Gangubai Kathiawadi had its world premiere.

Gangubai Kathiawadi Plot

Madhu, a young woman, is compelled to become a prostitute against her choice. Rashmibai, the madame of the brothel, tortures her since she won't become a prostitute. Later, it is requested of Gangubai to convince Madhu. When she first meets Madhu, she relates her own tale. 

Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi, the daughter of a lawyer and member of an affluent family in Kathiawad, dreamed of acting in Bollywood since she was a young child. She left home at the age of 16 with her boyfriend Ramnik Lal in order to pursue a film career in Mumbai under the guidance of his aunt Sheela. 

Her entire world was turned upside down when he sold her for Rs 1000 to Sheela Masi's brothel in Kamathipura, where she was compelled to work as a prostitute. She later changes her name to Gangu.
