A person who plays recorded music for an audience is known as a disc jockey, or DJ as it is more frequently known. The several types of DJs include turntablists, club DJs, radio DJs (who host shows on music radio stations), mobile DJs (who are contracted to work at public and private events like weddings, parties, or festivals), and nightclub DJs (who use record players, usually turntables, to manipulate sounds on phonograph records). The term "disc jockey" was originally used to refer to shellac records and then vinyl records, but it is now used more broadly to refer to people who mix music from several types of recording media, including cassettes, CDs, and digital audio files, using a CDJ, controller, or even a laptop.

DJs may use the designation "DJ" before their given names, assumed aliases, or stage names.

DJs frequently employ audio equipment that can simultaneously play at least two sources of recorded music. This gives them the ability to combine tracks to make transitions between recordings and build original song mixes. For a seamless transition from one song to the next, this may entail synchronising the beats of the various musical sources' sources so that their rhythms and tempos do not conflict when performed simultaneously.

DJs frequently utilise specialist DJ mixers, which are compact audio mixers with crossfader and cue functions for blending or switching between songs. They use various equipments such as Turntables, Media Players, DJ Mixers, Headphones, Softwares, Timecode, and DJ Controllers.

DJs working in loud nightclubs run the risk of developing tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss. With typical sound levels ranging between 93.2 and 109.7 dB, nightclubs consistently expose patrons to levels of noise that are unsafe.  In the industry, ear protection is required at average levels of 96dB or more, which are over the acceptable range that causes temporary and chronic auditory impairment in professional DJs. DJs make up 75 percent of the population and are susceptible to tenosynovitis in the wrists and other limbs.

Some famous DJs in India include DJ Akhtar, DJ Chetas, Omen , Lost Stories, Akcent, DJ Khushi, Shilpi Sharma, Aaron Amir, DJ Shiva, and Vehrnon.
