History

Currently, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are participating in the tournaments. Once every two years, in fact. In 2005, Afghanistan became a member of SAFF, however by 2015, it had moved on to create the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA).

As a successor to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Gold Cup, the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship made its debut in Lahore that same year, 1993. The event, which is held every two years, has become the most prestigious in South Asian football since it began. Due to the Bangladesh Football Federation's ban from FIFA, the SAFF Championship 2001 was initially scheduled for October/November 2001 but was moved to January/February 2002 and then to 2003. Bangladesh played host in 2018. The 2021 tournament was postponed twice because of the COVID-19 epidemic, and the final date will now be in October 2021.

Selecting a Host

On October 17, 2021, in the Maldives, Football Sri Lanka submitted a bid to host the tournament to the SAFF Executive Committee. On 21 January 2023, however, FIFA banned Sri Lanka from hosting or participating in any football tournaments.

When the deadline for applications to host SAFF was January 29, 2023, only Nepal had submitted a bid at the time. Following the SAFF members' meeting at the 33rd AFC Congress in Manama, Bahrain on February 1, 2023, the host was expected to be announced. India has been selected to host the 14th annual championship on February 14, 2023. On March 19, 2023, AIFF revealed that Bangalore would be hosting the 2023 SAFF Championship.

Participating CountriesSouth Asian Football Federation SAFF

On 21 January 2023, FIFA banned Sri Lankan football, rendering the national team ineligible for international competition. To raise the level of competition and the total number of teams participating in the championship, Kuwait and Lebanon were invited as guest teams.
