Spoilers

In the web series CAT, Gurnam Singh starts as a young boy who helps the police take down a group of separatists. His brutal past includes witnessing his parents' death, which he initially believes was caused by his uncle and another man.

This culminates in him infiltrating Madam Aulakh's inner circle when his younger brother Sunny gets into trouble for drug dealing. He rises through the ranks, eventually taking Madam Aulakh's right-hand man Shamsher's place. Throughout this journey, Gurnam's character evolves into a ruthless man who won’t hesitate to kill or manipulate others for his cause.

Intriguing revelations include discovering that Madam Aulakh's daughter and pop star Rocky are half-siblings. A further twist is when Gurnam recognizes Mr. Bill as the actual killer of his parents, leading him to work against the police. The corrupt police officer Chandan helps Gurnam fake his death, and in the end, Gurnam is seen crossing the border to Pakistan with a new identity.

Behind the scenes

CAT is primarily set in Punjab and features various authentic locales that help establish the atmosphere of the show. The set designers had to recreate the '90s era, adding detail and authenticity to the locations where the story unfolds. Also, Sood, who brilliantly plays Sunny in the series, had to depict a drug addict. To execute the drug scenes in a safer and more realistic way, he used glucose instead of actual drugs.

Review

Audience Review

Many viewers expressed admiration for the leading actor, Randeep Hooda's performance as Gurnam Singh, praising his embodiment of the character's identity and his perfect Punjabi accent. He is even labelled as 'Mr Perfectionist', owing to his meticulous preparation for roles. One review highlights how the series effectively builds suspense around the mystery of Gurnam's parents' killer, with several plot twists keeping viewers engaged. The fast-paced screenplay and terrific performances are acclaimed to capture the attention of the viewers until the end, despite not delving deep into the socio-political problems of Punjab in 2006.

While the review acknowledges the flawless performance by Randeep Hooda and other actors, there is criticism regarding some characters who seemed unnecessary - particularly those of the singer, Rocky, Madam Aulukh's daughter, and a prostitute who reviewers thought were given disproportionate screen time. The review ends on an anticipatory note for a second season, theorizing on a possible shift of the series to Canada and hinting at an exciting final scene.
