Skanda Movie Review
"Skanda" directed by Boyapati Srinu is a tale that thrives mostly on its action-packed presentation and hints at the excitement of a potential sequel. However, the plot reverberates with the same old echoes of revenge.
Right from the onset, the speed of the film is relentless. Accompanied by high-decibel background music, the narrative fast-pacedly introduces characters and potential conflicts, giving you hardly any time to contemplate, which is both riveting and dizzying.
In terms of the storyline, it depicts the friendship turned rivalry between AP CM Rayudu (Ajay Purkar) and TS CM Ranjith Reddy (Sharath Lohithaswa), unfolding alongside the narrative of a tycoon, Rudrakanti Ramakrishna Raju (Srikanth), and a rebellious student (Ram Pothineni). The plot teems with over-emphasized family values, high-testosterone action sequences, and women portrayed as mere pawns. Such tropes of repetition seem to dilute the wine of the original premise of the story.
The film's direction and editing, as customary to Boyapati Srinivas' style, showcase spectacular, elaborately choreographed fight sequences. Unfortunately, the foundation storyline, attempting to be both funny and serious, gets shrouded by the emphasis on action and the plot setup for the sequel, making it feel somewhat disjointed.
The animation and graphic effects in action sequences add to the viewing experience but the constantly blaring background score by Thaman overshadows it.
When it comes to the performances, Ram Pothineni, as the protagonist, is committed, showcasing a comfortable portrayal of his character. He offers a convincing and eye-pleasing presence on screen. Sreeleela, while excellent in dance sequences, stumbles a bit in emotional scenes. Saiee Manjrekar too falls short in delivering the emotional gravitas her character requires.
In conclusion, "Skanda" is a film that thrives on high-energy action sequences and the charm of Ram Pothineni. Its appeal might resonate strongly with an audience segment that enjoys high-voltage action sequences and doesn't insist on logic or a fresh story. However, it may not offer much for those seeking a cohesive, unique plot, and strong character development.
