A model and aspiring singer by the name of Laila, played by Meenakshi Chaudhary, is found dead under unexplained circumstances. An IPS officer named Sandhya Mohanraj, played by Ritika Singh, is given the task of investigating the crime. She believes that this will provide her with the opportunity to showcase her skills. As the situation becomes more complex and confusing, she decides to seek the assistance of Vinayak (Vijay Antony), her mentor and a former investigating officer, in order to track down the murderer. Vinayak, who is already going through a difficult time in his personal life, hesitantly agrees to take on the case in order to find some meaning in life.

Sandhya and Vinayak both begin asking questions about the different individuals in Laila's life, including her lover, a modelling agent, and a photographer. The revelations that occur not only get us deeper into the unknowns of Laila's life but also bring us closer to the identity of the murderer.

On July 21, 2023, Tamil cinema enthusiasts were treated to a unique cinematic experience with the release of Kolai. This murder mystery thriller, directed by an acclaimed filmmaker, offered a refreshing take on the genre.

Reviews

Kolai follows the formula of a whodunit, in which, as the investigation into the crime progresses, we start to question the honesty of everybody and everyone who is connected in any way to the victim. However, the tone and the treatment are what make it worth your time to watch.

The movie does a good job of masterfully crafting a complicated web of suspicion and intrigue, which pulls the audience into the mysterious realm of inquiry. However, it is all that the movie has to offer. The events that occur aren't very remarkable or surprising.

Balaji Kumar immerses us in the world of Laila while simultaneously presenting the inquiry in a non-chronological, parallel approach. Certain aspects of it are fascinating and captivating. However, we are unable to completely immerse ourselves in the emotional characteristics of the main characters in the story.

Even though Vijay Antony and Ritika Singh turn in solid performances, it is Meenakshi Chaudhary's acting and screen presence that help bring some of the moments to a higher level. The film's most notable achievements come from behind the camera, specifically in the areas of cinematography and editing.

Kolai is an engaging film overall, but the writing lacks the experimental quality that films of this kind typically demand from their writers.
