Introduction 

Jai Bhim is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language legal drama film produced by Jyothika and Suriya under the banner of 2D Entertainment and directed by T. J. Gnanavel. Suriya, Lijomol Jose, and Manikandan are the movie's leading actors. Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh, and other actors play supporting roles. A marginalized group is the target of state violence and police racism in the movie.

It centers on the lives of Sengeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe, and is based on a real-life episode from 1993 that involved a lawsuit that Justice K. Chandru fought. Police detained Rajakannu, who was later reported missing from the police station. Sengeni asks Chandru, a lawyer, for assistance in her fight for her husband's rights.

Story

Rajakannu and Sengeni, a couple from the oppressed Irula tribe, toil in the fields of oppressive caste men hard eradicate rat infestations and capture poisonous snakes in 1993. Rajakannu is summoned to a wealthy man's home to capture a snake that snuck into a chamber. The man's husband discovers missing jewellery from her closet the following day, casting doubt on Rajakannu, and a burglary is reported. The police search Rajakannu's home for proof. Rajakannu had earlier left the town for a job. The cops wrongfully detained and viciously beat the pregnant Sengeni during the incursion. 

Other family members of Rajakannu, including his sister Pachaiammal, brother-in-law Mosakutty, and brother-in-law Iruttupan, are detained by the police and tortured into divulging the whereabouts of Rajakannu. Rajakannu is captured by the police and taken to jail. In exchange for his confession, they torture him and free Sengeni. Later, she learns that all three detained guys have fled, and the police threaten her if she tells them where they are.

Mythra, who instructs Irula tribe members, discovers about Chandru, a lawyer who represents tribal people, and she can persuade him to fight for Sengeni's rights. Chandru submits a habeas corpus petition to the court after hearing Sengeni's account of all previous events. The judge initially suggests that they submit their petition to a lower court. Still, Chandru requests a witness examination—a step that is not typically taken in a habeas corpus case. However, after Chandru brings up the Rajan case, the court relents. Based on the testimony of the police officers, the solicitor general for the police claims that Rajakannu and the other two fled from police custody the night they were apprehended. Chandru realizes that the witnesses lied when he finds errors in their testimony. He then requested that the court investigate Sub-Inspector Gurumurthy (a casteist), Head Constable Veerasamy, and Constable Kirubakaran.

Release

Due to the pandemic, Jai Bhim was released directly on the OTT platform- Amazon Prime Video on 2 November 2021.

Reviews

Jai Bhim is a huge success. Both the audience and critics applauded the movie. The movie with the highest user rating on IMDb is Jai Bhim, which has a 9.3/10 rating. And near about 66824 google users have rated the movie 4.9 out of 5. The Times of India has given 3.5 out of 5. The audience liked the movie to its core.

Character Analysis

• Chandru played by Suriya - Chandru is a social activist who practices law. Suriya has an even, boiling anger in her eyes the entire time. Suriya's anger, however, doesn't turn him into a monster; it also demonstrates his dignity.
• Sengeni Rajakannu played by Lijomol Jose - Sengani is hard-working, dedicated, and passionate about locating her spouse, even being eight months pregnant. And other women in Jai Bhim are strong, capable, and unwaveringly committed to pursuing justice. Many instances highlight these qualities.

Controversy 

The Vanniyar Sangam, the parent organization of the Pattali Makkal Katchi or PMK, objected to Jai Bhim because of a sequence in which the character Gurumoorthy, a sub-inspector, was featured. The PMK leaders felt that this scene was offensive to the Vanniyar community. Anbumani Ramadoss, the leader of the PMK, issued a letter asking about several concerns regarding the movie and how it slandered the neighborhood. In the movie, a wall calendar in the home of the sub-inspector had a picture of a pot of fire, representing the Vanniyar community.

The sub-name, inspector's Gurumoorthy, was criticized by Ramadoss because he believes it disparages PMK leader Kaduvetti Guru. While the names of the people involved in the case were used for their fictional personas in the movie, the name Anthonysamy was not given to the character of the sub-inspector. Suriya countered, saying that the film's production crew had no desire to harm any particular person or group of people. He added, "Questions have been raised against people in power through the film; it should not be softened and turned into name-politics."

Police security was provided to Suriya's home in T. Nagar, Chennai, in response to threats from the PMK and the Vanniyar Sangam.  Many filmmakers have openly defended Suriya, including Vetrimaaran, Lokesh Kanagaraj, Pa. Ranjith, C. S. Amudhan, Prakash Raj (who appeared in the movie), Sathyaraj, and Siddharth. In contrast, organizations like the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce have also spoken out in her favor.  Nadigar Sangam and the Tamil Film Active Producers Association objected to the attacks.  On Twitter, the hashtag #WeStandWithSuriya became popular. To which Suriya replied by expressing gratitude for the "huge support" of the audience. On Twitter, Gnanavel expressed regret and claimed that holding Suriya accountable for the uproar was wrong. 

The Madras High Court dismissed criminal charges against Suriya and Gnanavel on August 11, 2022, for allegedly hurting the feelings of the Vanniyar people in the movie. The court pointed out that no such occurrence had been documented, despite the complainant's claims that the movie was meant to inspire animosity and violence towards a particular minority.
