Biography

Mukesh Chand Mathur, also known as Mukesh, was a renowned Indian playback singer. Widely recognized as one of the most celebrated and admired singers in the Hindi film industry, Mukesh earned numerous accolades throughout his career. One of his notable achievements was winning the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his song "Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai" from the movie Rajnigandha (1973). Mukesh was particularly known for lending his voice to actors such as Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Feroz Khan, Sunil Dutt, and Dilip Kumar.

Age

Before his death, Mukesh  was 53 years old and his zodiac sign was Cancer.

Childhood

Mukesh was born into a Mathur Kayastha family in Delhi. His parents, Zorawar Chand Mathur, an engineer, and Chandrani Mathur, had ten children, with Mukesh being the sixth. Initially, a music teacher visited their home to teach Mukesh's sister, Sundar Pyari. However, it was Mukesh who became an eager pupil, listening attentively from the next room. After completing the 10th grade, Mukesh left school and briefly worked for the Department of Public Works. During his time in Delhi, he started experimenting with voice recordings, which eventually led to the development of his singing abilities and instrumental skills.

Family

Mukesh was the sixth child in a family of ten children. His parents, Zorawar Chand Mathur and Chandrani Mathur, had a total of ten children, with Mukesh being the sixth one.

Mukesh Wife  - Saral Trivedi

Mukesh defied obstacles to marry Saral Trivedi, daughter of wealthy Raichand Trivedi. Unable to obtain her father's consent due to their unsettled circumstances and Mukesh's "immoral" profession as a movie singer, they eloped. On Mukesh's 23rd birthday, they married in a Kandivali temple with support from actor Motilal and R.D. Mathur's residence. Despite dire predictions, the couple persevered through hardships and celebrated their 30th anniversary four days before Mukesh's departure to the USA. They were blessed with five children: Rita, Nitin (a singer like his father), Nalini (who sadly passed away in 1978), Mohnish, and Namrata (also known as Amrita). Notably, Mukesh's grandson is the actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, the son of Nitin.

This love story is marked by courage, as they defied societal norms and braved uncertain times. Mukesh's passion for music drove him to experiment and develop his singing and instrumental skills while working in Delhi. Despite facing challenges and being labeled with societal stigmas, Mukesh and Saral's commitment endured, culminating in a three-decade-long marriage.

Their story serves as a testament to the power of love and determination, showcasing how two individuals can overcome obstacles, both personal and societal, to create a life together. Mukesh's contribution to the world of Indian playback singing continues to be cherished, while his love story with Saral remains an inspiration.

Career

Mukesh's musical journey began when his talent was noticed by Motilal, a distant relative, while singing at his sister's wedding. Motilal took him to Mumbai and arranged for singing lessons from Pandit Jagannath Prasad. His first foray into the film industry was as an actor-singer in the movie Nirdosh (1941), where he sang "Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho To." However, it was his playback singing career that truly took off with the song "Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De" from the film Pehli Nazar (1945). Mukesh initially emulated his idol, K.L. Saigal, but with the help of music director Naushad Ali, he developed his own distinctive style.

Mukesh became the preferred playback voice for actors like Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor. He collaborated extensively with composers Shankar-Jaikishan, recording 133 songs for them, and also worked with other notable music directors such as Kalyanji-Anandji. Mukesh received critical acclaim for his songs, winning the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for "Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai" from Rajnigandha (1974). He also won several Filmfare Awards, including three for Shankar-Jaikishan compositions.

Among his most popular songs are "Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye" from Anand (1971), "Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai" from Shor (1972), and "Sab Kuch Seekha Humne" from Anari (1959). Mukesh's unique voice and emotional renditions endeared him to audiences. He sang 110 songs for Raj Kapoor, 47 songs for Manoj Kumar, and 20 songs for Dilip Kumar. Despite his comparatively fewer songs, Mukesh prioritized quality over quantity and left an indelible mark on the world of Hindi film music.

Mukesh began his career as an actor-singer in the movie Nirdosh in 1941, starring alongside Nalini Jaywant. He appeared in another film called Adab Arz in 1943. In 1953, he had a guest role in Raj Kapoor's film Aah. Mukesh also took on leading roles as a hero in films like Mashooka in 1953, opposite Suraiya, and Anurag in 1956, where he was also the co-producer and composer. He also ventured into film production, producing the movie Malhar in 1951, featuring Arjun as the hero and Shammi as the heroine, under Darling Films.
