Mitchell Josef Santner is a cricket player for New Zealand who competes internationally in all formats of the sport. He participates in domestic cricket for the Northern Districts squad. Santner received a promotion to the New Zealand team following a successful domestic campaign in 2014–15. Daniel Vettori retired after the 2015 World Cup and New Zealand was looking for another left-arm spin alternative. He was subsequently picked for the one-day team for the tour of England. 

Santner was then added to the touring team at the beginning of the England trip to fill in for the players who were playing in the Indian Premier League and he made an immediate impact with a well-crafted 94 against Somerset. With only 19 List A games under his belt for Northern Districts he was given his One Day International debut at Edgbaston.

In the New Zealand domestic system Mitchell Santner made his First-Class debut for the Northern Districts in 2011 and has since competed for the same group. 

The left-arm orthodox spinner spent the 2016–17 season with Worcestershire. He had only participated in 19 List A games for the Northern Districts but the selectors recognized his talent and quickly advanced him to the national team.

Santner was selected for the New Zealand limited-overs team for the tour of England in April 2015. On June 9 2015 he played his first international for New Zealand. Sam Billings also making his debut was caught for three as a result of his maiden international wicket. He scored 28 runs in one over off Adil Rashid during the fourth ODI of the same series which is the second-highest number of runs in one over ever recorded in England. On June 23 2015 he made his Twenty20 international debut in the same series. 

Santner made his debut in his first Test match against Australia on November 27 2015. It was also the first test played throughout the day and night. He made his test debut against Australia in a day-night test match becoming history's first player to do so. The first ball of his Test career resulted in a boundary for him.

Santner a top spin bowler who was playing his final international tour was chosen for the New Zealand team along with Nathan McCullum. 

Santner was named man of the match in the opening game against host India for his outstanding bowling effort which helped his team win by 47 runs. The greatest bowling figure by a New Zealand spinner in the World Twenty20 is his 4 for 11. He was included in the 2016 T20 World Cup's Team of the Tournament by the ICC Cricinfo and Cricbuzz.

In the fourth ODI Santner and Jeetan Patel made history by being the first spinner duo to start bowling. on January 16 2018. Santner used a carrom ball which he had been practicing with for some time but had just recently included in his international arsenal to bowl Pakistani bowler Fakhar Zaman.

Santner missed the Test series against England in March 2018 due to a knee injury that would keep him out of action for six to nine months. Santner's anticipated 2018 stints in the Indian Premier League and English county cricket with Derbyshire had to be shelved due to an injury.

He was one of twenty players who received new contracts from New Zealand Cricket in May 2018 for the 2018–19 season.

2019

Santner made his international comeback against Sri Lanka on January 11 2019 in the lone T20I played between the teams. After that he participated in all three T20Is four of the five ODIs against India and two of the three ODIs against Bangladesh that same summer. He was selected for the New Zealand team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019.

Santner made his IPL debut in 2019 after being purchased by Chennai Super Kings for INR 50 Lakhs. He scored a six on the game's final ball while representing Chennai Super Kings defeating Rajasthan Royals.

Santner recorded his first test century when facing England at Bay Oval in November 2019. His 261-run stand with BJ Watling established a record for New Zealand's best 7th-wicket partnership in test cricket. He also picked up three wickets in the second innings becoming the first New Zealand spinner to do so at home since March 2018—101 straight Test wickets over 11 innings fell to seamers in that time.

Santner was chosen for the New Zealand team to compete in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in August 2021. He was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League competition in February 2022.
