Durga Maa, also known as Goddess Durga, is one of the most significant deities in Hinduism. She is a fierce yet benevolent form of the divine female who embodies Shakti–the cosmic power. Worshipped as the mother goddess, Durga represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and righteousness in the universe. She represents protection, strength, motherhood, destruction, and wars.
Durga Maa's name in Sanskrit means "the invincible" symbolising her indefatigable force in vanquishing evil. Depicted as having ten or sometimes eight arms, each carrying different weapons symbolising strength and power, she rides a lion or a tiger, signifying her mastery over all virtues, power, and courage. In her many arms, the various weapons signify the embodiment of the collective energy (Shakti) of all gods.
Goddess Durga is revered for her triumph over the buffalo-demon Mahishasura, a feat that earned her the name Mahishasura Mardini. This victory is more than a physical battle; it symbolises the victory of good over evil. Durga's fight with Mahishasura epitomises the eternal battle between good and evil, right and wrong, which spans across the cosmos.
Durga Puja, a prominent festival celebrated every year, in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin (typically falls in September or October), is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. The festival spans for four, nine or ten days, culminating on the tenth day also known as Vijayadashami, celebrating her victory over evil forces. The day of Durga's victory is called Vijayadashami (Bijoya in Bengali), Dashain (Nepali), or Dussehra. These words simply mean "the victory on the tenth (day)".
During these ten days people worship maa durga by bringing her idol in their houses and society. They wish each other and pray together by singing aartis and mantras to worship maa durga. Some also light the akhand jyoti diya for mata.
In many regions of India, especially West Bengal, Durga Puja is marked by elaborate decorations, processions, dance, drama, and cultural performances. Life-sized clay models of the Goddess, known as Durga idols, are designed and worshipped as part of the festivities.
