Diwali, celebrated with great enthusiasm, paints the world with light, joy, and spiritual wisdom. In 2023, we welcome this auspicious Festival of Lights from Friday, 10 Nov, 2023 to Tuesday, 14 Nov, 2023, culminating our journey with Diwali Padwa. This rich montage of celebrations marks different aspects of life, from prosperity to familial bonds, each with its unique Muhurat or auspicious timing. What is the Story Behind Balipratipada? Mahabali, Prahlada's grandson, was a renowned Asura king, recognized for his bravery, righteousness, and love for Vishnu. Despite the benevolence and popularity of King Mahabali, his allies often caused havoc by attacking and robbing the suras (Devas), who represented justice and virtue. When the defeated suras sought Vishnu's help in their fight against Mahabali, Vishnu declined to directly combat Mahabali due to his righteous rule and devotion to Vishnu himself. Instead, Vishnu promised to subtly aid the suras. Mahabali, known for his generosity, pledged to give away any gift requested during his Yajna ritual. Seizing this opportunity, Vishnu adopted the avatar of a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana. As Vamana, Vishnu approached Mahabali, who magnanimously offered him anything he desired. Vamana humbly requested for only as much land as could be covered in "three paces", to which Mahabali agreed. Subsequently, Vamana expanded into a gigantic form, known as Trivikrama, and claimed all of Mahabali's kingdom in just two paces. For the third pace, Mahabali offered his own head, following which Vishnu relegated him to the Patala, or the nether world. Admiring Mahabali's commitment and honesty, Vishnu granted him a boon allowing him to visit his subjects on earth once a year. This annual return of Mahabali from the Patala to earth is celebrated as Bali Padyami. In another interpretation of the legend, following Vamana pushing Mahabali to the netherworld (Patalaloka), Vishnu, upon Prahlada's request (Bali's grandfather and an ardent devotee of Vishnu), pardoned Mahabali, giving him kingship of the netherworld. Vishnu also granted Bali's request to revisit earth once a year to be celebrated and worshipped, marking the occasion as a day of festivity. What is the significance of Bali Pratipada or Diwali Padwa? Bali Pratipada, also known as Bali Padyami, Diwali Padva, Virapratipada or Dyutapratipada, holds great significance in the Diwali celebrations. Celebrated on the fourth day of Diwali, this day honors the notional return of the daitya-king Bali to earth. Balipratipada admires the victory of Vamana, the fifth incarnation of Vishnu, over Mahabali and all asuras, through his transformation into Trivikrama. This legend relates to the triumph of Lord Vishnu against the demon king Bali in the Vamana Avatar. The festival marks the first day of the bright lunar fortnight in the Hindu month of Kartik. It's also seen as an association with the story of Bali's defeat at the hands of Vishnu. In some parts of the country, such as the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Diwali Padwa is substantially celebrated, and it's known by different names. For Gujaratis, the day is called Varsha Pratipada or Bestu Varas. The auspicious timings or 'Muhurat' for the Bali Puja are determined and followed, adding deeper spiritual significance to this day. The day represents the bond of love and respect that spouses have for each other King Bali, also known as Mahabali, is a legendary king accordig to Hindu texts. He was known to be a 'daitya' king. King Bali is the grandson of Prahlada, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, and the son of Virochana.  Diwali Padwa is also called Bali Pratipada, Bali Padyami or Dyutapratipada.
