Plot

The series, co-produced by Tipping Point Productions and Flying Saucer, is set in 1989 in Lucknow and Agra when 'bae' was a common suffix added to phrases, similar to Da/di or machan in Tamil. Perhaps a happier era existed before the Babri Masjid when people did not analyze interfaith unions, when we children drank Rasna and our parents Old Monk, when everyone purchased cakes decorated with roses from nearby bakeries, and when people wrote letters and love notes rather than forwarding WhatsApp messages.

The show stars an ensemble cast of varied ages whose interconnecting love tales take place against the backdrop of Lucknow University and, eventually, the Taj Mahal. Akhtar and Sarita are philosophy and physics teachers, respectively, with a 12-year-old son and a 22-year friendship. The gap between them is growing wider as their marriage hangs due to her frequent displeasure with him and his refusal to engage in what she views as intelligent activities. At a Mushaira, Akhtar runs into his former classmate Sudhakar (Danish Husain) and his companion Mumtaz (Sheeba Chadha) (poetry reading).

We quickly see that Sudhakar and Mumtaz are in love but not married. The confused college students who dabble in love, sex, and politics without fully committing to anything are Akhtar and Sarita's pupils and their pals. The program, which alternates between serious drama and romantic comedy whenever things become a little too unpleasant and real, doesn't try to offer solutions or take a position on the topics it raises.

Dharam and Rashmi are dating, and things are initially going well. The most fleshed-out character among the younger group is their everyday buddy Angad, who states that he prefers sex to the entanglements of love. The older characters are significantly more exciting and receive some of the best lines and moments of the series.

Episode Synopsis

Episode 1

Sarita and Akhtar, lecturers at Lucknow University, are a married couple who are frequently at odds. The University's power couple, Rashmi and Dharam, are close friends with Angad, who rejects romantic love. Sudhakar, Dharam's uncle, is discouraged by his and Angad's laziness. Sunaina, a student, secretly sees Shalin, a young Bombay man. As Akhtar encounters Sudhakar and his companion, Mumtaz, during a poetry symposium, their lives start to converge.

Episode 2

Sarita is angry when Akhtar invites Sudhakar and Mumtaz for dinner. On the other hand, Rashmi is displeased that Angad won't assist her with the adaptation of the play Hayavadana. At his friend Shontu's property, Angad hosts a birthday celebration. Despite Rashmi's continued disregard for Angad, he commits to assisting Shontu in winning over Mamta. Akhtar reluctantly agrees to watch a movie with Sarita, but he also takes Sudhakar. Sarita and Akhtar's marriage is beginning to deteriorate.

Episode 3

When Sarita sees her friend Prabha, she starts to think about what it would be like to get divorced. Dharam joins a local goon named Babbu Bhaiya because he wants power and persuades him to run for office from their party in the university elections. Akhtar finds that Sarita has decided to divorce her husband. He gets intoxicated at Sudhakar's place and tells Sudhakar the truth about his connection with Mumtaz, which makes him angry and hurt. Rashmi and Dharam's relationship is beginning to suffer due to his political activity.

Episode 4

With Angad's assistance, Shontu is able to win over Mamta. He receives her Communist party's nomination to run for president in the college elections. After a contentious argument, Angad and Mamta start arguing again, which causes Angad to second-guess his choice to assist Shontu. Sudhakar tries to console Mumtaz after she is humiliated during a public confrontation. Meanwhile, Akhtar and Sarita's conflict erupts into a violent fight as it reaches a breaking point.

Episode 5

The kidnapping of Shontu causes fear at the university. Mamta declares her candidature for president over the next few days, and Sarita and Akhtar, who had just returned from a honeymoon in Agra, decide to formalize their divorce. As Mamta gains popularity, Dharam enlists the help of his men to intimidate her into making a concession. Mumtaz is hurt, and Sudhakar comes to the hospital to meet her. They discuss their future together and reach a decision.

Episode 6

Dharam's compulsion for power destroys his relationships and even enrages Babbu Bhaiya. Dharam offers to assist Sunaina in fleeing with Shalin out in a desperate attempt to win back his favor. Rashmi decides to confess after realizing she is in love with Angad. Despite spending time together in Agra, Sarita, and Akhtar is still very well aware of their approaching divorce. Mumtaz's past comes back to haunt her while Sudhakar and Mumtaz relocate to Barabanki to start fresh.

Episode 7

Akhtar and Sarita's life, Rashmi and Angad's, Sunaina and Shalin's, Mamta and Dharam's, and others all cross in Agra. A fight breaks out at the Agra railway station, while a fight occurs at the police station. Some relationships end in marriage, while others are broken apart. Love is still a virus that is evolving as long as life exists.

Character Analysis

taj mahal 1989 cast.tring

He is a physics professor, and his wife is a philosopher. He is a married man whose wife is seeking his love and attention. And she will go to whatever lengths to make that aspect of her life successful. This individual enjoys reading poetry and other Urdu writing. He claims that books are the center of his existence and that he would live in an igloo made of books if he could. And that is how he lives.

Geetanjali Kulkarni's character of Sarita in the Indian web series "Taj Mahal 1989" is a complex and layered one. Sarita is shown as a hard-working, no-nonsense, and practical woman who is also deeply emotional. She is a dedicated wife, mother, and daughter-in-law, but is not afraid to speak her mind and challenge societal norms when necessary. Despite facing numerous obstacles and hardships, she remains strong and resilient, driven by her love for her family and her desire for a better life. Through her struggles and triumphs, Sarita serves as a powerful representation of the strength and determination of women in India.

Anud Singh Dhaka, who plays Angad, is unquestionably the best actor among the young group, playing a role that may be intended to be a more youthful mirror image of Akhtar. He is the only one who prevents Sheeba Chadha and Kabi from entirely erasing the parallel narrative line about bewildered college students who flirt with politics like the show but never really commit to it.
