Plot

The Riddler, a masked serial murderer, kills Gotham City Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. on Halloween. In the process of the investigation, Batman joins the police force to help solve the crime. He's been active for two years and has had a big impact on the city's criminal underground, but the police and the people of Gotham remain suspicious of him. A note that the Riddler left for Batman is found by Lieutenant James Gordon. The second night, the Riddler murders Commissioner Pete Savage and leaves Batman with yet another note.

The Riddler put a thumb drive in Mitchell's car containing photographs of Mitchell with a lady, Annika Kosolov, at the Iceberg Lounge; a club run by the crime leader Carmine Falcone's subordinate named Oswald Cobblepot also known as The Penguin. Batman discovers that Selina Kyle, Annika's roommate, is a waiter at the club while the Penguin is playing the fool. Bruce is unable to reach Annika, and she eventually disappears. Selina is sent back to the Iceberg Lounge by Batman in order to gather information as well as help save Annika. Selina informs him that Falcone employed Savage and District Attorney Gil Colson.

Meanwhile, a dangerous and cunning serial killer known as the Riddler (played by Paul Dano) is leaving cryptic puzzles for Batman to solve. The Riddler is a criminal mastermind who is obsessed with puzzles. Colson is taken hostage by The Riddler, who then places a timed collar bomb around his neck and sends him to interrupt Mitchell's funeral. Bruce, who was present at the funeral, makes a comeback as Batman. The Riddler uses Colson's phone to call Batman and threatens to blow up the bomb if Colson can't solve three riddles. The final question in the riddle was the identity of the insider who provided the GCPD with intel that resulted in a major drug arrest that put an end to gangster Salvatore Maroni's operation. Colson declines to respond and is killed when the bomb goes off, knocking Batman out in the process. 

Batman is arrested by the cops, but Gordon assists him in escaping. After determining that the informant might be the Penguin, Batman, and Gordon follow him to a drug operation. They learn that numerous corrupt GCPD officials were involved in the transfer of Maroni's enterprise to Falcone. When Selina arrives to steal some money, she finds Annika's body in a car's trunk and unintentionally exposes them. Batman and Gordon find the Penguin is not the informant after a vehicle pursuit.

Batman and Gordon discover that the Riddler carries ill will towards the Wayne family when they trace the Riddler's trail to the remains of an orphanage supported by Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce's dead parents. A parcel comes to Bruce's mansion while he is away at the orphanage, and Alfred opens it. Alfred is in the hospital because the parcel that was intended for Bruce had explosives. The Riddler leaks proof that Thomas hired Falcone to kill a reporter who was researching Martha's family's history of mental illness for a story. Bruce questions Alfred, who claims that Thomas just asked Falcone to intimidate the journalist into quietness; once Thomas learned Falcone killed the writer instead, Thomas had intended to give himself and Falcone over to the cops. Alfred believes that Falcone murdered Thomas and Martha in order to protect himself.

Batman learns that Annika was killed because she discovered that Falcone was the informant, and Selina admits that Falcone is her father and that he killed both Annika and her mother. Falcone tackles Selina as she attempts to kill him. She is saved, and Falcone is captured when Batman and Gordon show up in time. However, a sniper ordered by the Riddler ends up killing Falcone. 

Later, police officers discover the Riddler sitting in a nearby cafe and arrest him. He is identified as Edward Nashton, a forensic accountant. In Arkham State Hospital, where he is a prisoner, the Riddler tells Batman that he was influenced by him in his hunt for corrupt officials. Batman discovers that Nashton is planning to kill Mayor-elect Bella Reál by using car explosives he has hidden around Gotham and an internet fan base he has built. The explosives flood the city and demolish the seawall surrounding Gotham. The followers of the Riddler make an effort to murder Bella Reál, but Batman and Selina are able to prevent them. 

Following this, Nashton makes friends with another prisoner, while Selina decides Gotham is no longer worth preserving and disappears. Batman commits to spreading hope in Gotham while helping with the rebuilding.

 

Release

The release date for The Batman 2022 was originally set for the 21st of June, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed several times.

Warner Bros. announced that the movie would be released on the 4th of March, 2022. The film received positive reactions from fans and critics alike, and it quickly became one of the most talked-about movies of the year.

On the 18th of April, 2022, The Batman was released for digital download and streaming on HBO Max. Carmine Falcone (John Turturro)

Selina's father and a Gotham crime boss, Falcone, the Riddler's principal objective, controls a large portion of Gotham.

Oswald Oz Cobblepot/Penguin (Colin Farrell)

Selina's employer, The Penguin, is the owner of the Iceberg Lounge. He serves as Falcone's primary lieutenant. Oswald doesn't like the name Penguin and isn't yet the crime boss that the comics portray him as.
