The story of Farhana follows the life of a mother named Farhana who, in spite of the opposition of her traditionalist family, goes against the tide and accepts a job in a call center. As soon as she starts making money, her family is able to start meeting their financial obligations, which ultimately makes everyone happier. Nevertheless, Farhana learns that there is another portion of the call center that gives better income; nevertheless, the service that requires her to engage in chats with men who are sexually interested in her.

Farhana is so determined to provide for her family that she decides to work in that department of the call center. Along the way, she develops a deep relationship with a particular caller and comes to recognise him as a friend. Farhana welcomes her new responsibilities with open arms, oblivious to the challenges and perils that lie ahead. She compares the sensation to that of a bird being let free after being imprisoned.

As the plot develops, Farhana comes to the realisation that not all of the opportunities she comes across are means by which she might find consolation. Some of them turn out to be treacherous traps that put her well-being and the harmony of her family in risk. There are multiple layers of complexity to her experiences, and when she decides to go outside the protocols of the firm and meet the unknown person who was on the other end of the conversation, chaos ensues.

The film delves into topics such as self-sacrifice, morality, and the repercussions of going for one's goals no matter the cost of the trip that Farhana takes. The captivating drama Farhana tells the story of a Muslim mother from a middle-class family who is having trouble making ends meet. She decides to work in a contact centre, which gives her more independence while also allowing her to support her family financially. However, things take a turn for the worst when she learns that another team within the call centre is more financially rewarding. She has no idea that this group is participating in a service that caters to the needs of horny guys looking for virtual companionship.

Farhana is at first repelled by the idea, but she eventually comes to terms with the nature of her profession. She is motivated to do so by the favourable influence that her higher salary has on her family. Along the way, she develops a strong relationship with a caller, which ultimately provides her with a source of comfort.

However, as Farhana gets deeper into her double life, she gradually comes to the realisation that not all of the roads she travels down lead to a place of peace and safety. Some of them are snares that are just waiting for her to walk into them. When Farhana, motivated by her feelings, makes the decision to meet the stranger from her calls in person, hidden dangers and secrets that have been concealed beneath the surface come to the surface. Her world is turned upside down as a direct result of her acts, and she must now face the repercussions of her defiance. The ramifications of her actions are terrible.

The premiere of the movie was delayed from its original date of the 26th of January in 2023 to the 12th of May of that same year. 

Review

The film Farhana is simple but captivating, and it succeeds as a result of both the way it was directed and the solid work done by the performers. Aishwarya Rajesh gives a mesmerising performance as the character with the same name as the play, bringing depth and realism to the part. The plot of the movie is enriched with additional layers of significance without being overtly evident thanks to the film's artistic choices and subtle connections.

The portrayal that Aishwarya Rajesh gives as Farhana is outstanding, as she manages to convey both the character's hardships and her resiliency. Controversy

The name Farhana has stirred much debate across the state of Tamil Nadu. A number of different Muslim organisations all around the state have voiced their displeasure with the film because it focuses on a Muslim woman.

The Indian National League (INL) has referred to the movie as anti-Islamic and said that it presented a poor image of the Muslim community in its criticism of the movie. Tada J. Abdul Rahim, the head of the INL, has lodged a complaint against the film with the Chennai Police Commissioner, demanding him to prohibit the screening of it.

A Muslim woman who engages in sexual activities while travelling the world while wearing a burqa is depicted in the trailer for the upcoming film. The violent politics of Hindutva are an insult to Islamic culture, as the leader of the INL argued in his complaint, which you can read here.

A huge number of security personnel have been stationed near the home of actress Aishwarya Rajesh, who played the role of Farhana in the film. Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal made this decision after he became aware of widespread demonstrations.

M.H. Jawahirullah, the leader of the Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, stated that the film is not only an insult to Muslim women but to all of the women in the country as a whole.

A rally against the film was also coordinated by Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam that took place next to the old bus terminal in the Tiruvarur district. As a result of the widespread demonstrations, several cinemas in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu have decided to cancel their screenings of the film.

The box office collection of the movie was around Rs. 1.43 Crore. The low box office collection may be linked to the controversies which prevailed around the movie.
