Cocktail is a romantic comedy-drama Hindi film released worldwide in theatres in 2012. This film directed by Homi Adajania and written by Imtiaaz Ali stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty, Dimple Kapadia, and Boman Irani in the lead cast.

The plot of the movie revolves around a love triangle between a man and two girls who happen to be best friends but are total opposites of each other. Meera, a traditional Indian girl with all the etiquette, meets Veronica, a party animal in the washroom, and becomes best friends with this random girl she met. Both of them tend to fall in love with the same Casanova guy Gautam. Though Veronica and Gautam had a no ifs and or buts relationship Gautam and Meera developed true love for each other during a charade in front of Gautam’s mother and uncle.

The film has an IMDB rating of 6.3/10 and Rotten Tomatoes rating of 67%. The film has won a number of awards including the Vogue Beauty Awards and BIG Star Entertainment Awards. The film is available on several OTT platforms as well such as Prime Video, Jio Cinema and Zee5

Meera Gupta (Diana Penty) a typical Indian traditional girl moves to London to be with her husband Kunal (Randeep Hooda) leaving her family behind in India. As soon as she lands in London she encounters Gautam Kapoor (Saif Ali Khan), an audacious flirt who can hit upon any woman. Gautam tries to initiate a conversation with Meera who is not at all impressed with his behavior, she clarifies to him that she is married and has moved to London with her husband. After this episode, Meera searches for Kunal and after hours of searching, she finally finds and gets the shock of her life. Kunal is furious to see Meera and claims that he had married Meera just for the sake of money as a result Meera is left heartbroken and homeless in London.

Meera after this whole incident encounters Veronica (Deepika Padukone) who is her complete opposite, a free-spirited party animal who was spoiled because of her father’s money. Veronica takes Meera to a nightclub where they meet Gautam. Gautam being “the shameless flirt” did not leave a chance and chose to be with Veronica for that whole night. Meera was not at all pleased by their intimacy and the sudden closeness they had developed. At the start, Meera disliked all of this but gradually she accepted it and became good friends with Veronica and Gautam and eventually the 3 of them lived together under the same roof. 

The movie gets an interesting twist when Gautam’s mother Kavita (Dimple Kapadia) and his Uncle Randhir (Boman Irani) plan to visit him. Both of the new entries are shocked to see the drunken behavior of Gautam and the kind of atmosphere they are living in. Kavita sits down with her son to have a conversation on marriages and Gautam lies to his mom about having a relationship with Meera as Meera being the typical Indian girl would fit into his mother’s type. 

During this whole act of fake love in front of Gautam's mother, Gautam, and Veronica truly fall in love with each other. After days of lying, they finally sit down with Veronica and spill out the whole truth. Veronica initially acts as if she is fine but from the inside, she is completely broken. Veronica feels that Meerahad used and betrayed her. The three of them part their ways, completely broken. While Meera gets back to Kunal and Gautam gets back to his work, Veronica moves into depression and indulges in self-harm and destructive activities. One day she meets with a car accident and is hospitalised. Both Gautam and Meera rush to the hospital to check on her and pretend as if both of them have moved on from each other. 

Gautam helps Veronica recover from the injuries. During the time they had spent together, Veronica realized that Gautam had changed and was no longer the same flirtatious man. She realized that he was deeply in love with Meera. 

This is where the movie gets its happy ending. Veronica helps Gautam propose to Meera and the three of them get back together as best friends.

Reviews

Cocktail is a romantic comedy drama film directed by Homi Adijania which brings to you a perfect desi love triangle story. The movie has a pleasing first half but a pretty messed up second half. It offers the perfect punch lines and humor and serves the excitement level in the first half of the movie but as the name suggests COCKTAIL, it is a total mixture in the second half. 

As for the performance, it felt as if the cast was tailor-made for their roles. As per many viewers, it was Deepika Padukone and the music that saved the film. Cocktail brought up Diana Penty on the big screens for the first time and this debut of her made a good impression on her career. Saif Ali Khan delivers an exceptional performance as well. 

The music becomes the main highlight of the film. With beats that would make you groove and lyrics that would transfer you to a nightclub, cocktail comes up with some of the most amazing tracks. 

Some of the viewers feel that the posters portrayed a very different story whereas the movie was like every Hindi drama movie. 

This film can definitely be watched to lighten up moods or if you want to experience a classic Bollywood love triangle.

• Earlier Priyanka Chopra was chosen for this film to play the role of Veronica.

• Deepika Padukone was given a choice for her character i.e. whether she wanted to play Veronica or Meera. She chose the role of Veronica because the role of Meera was similar to the role she played in Love Aaj Kal.

• The first official trailer for the movie received an incredible response, garnering more than 1 million views on YouTube in just three days.

• When Honey Singh's song Angreji Beat was left from the album, fans became unhappy. People believed the song would be utilized for the soundtrack and movie because it was featured in the trailer. Many supporters felt betrayed because this did not take place. Kareena Kapoor enjoyed the song after hearing it. Saif was asked to use it for the caravan at her request.

• Earlier Anurag Kashyap was supposed to write the screenplay and story but he chose to opt out later on. 

• The director was not comfortable with the Hindi language but directed a Hindi movie.
