The story starts with Vicky Rai, the shrewd head of the Rai Group of Industries and the father of Jagannath Rai, the Home Minister of Chhattisgarh. At a party he planned to celebrate his acquittal in the rape and murder of two shelter home girls, however, Vicky was brutally murdered. There are six potential suspects surrounding the murder, and DCP Sudha Bhardwaj and Suraj Yadav of the Central Bureau of Investigation are the case's investigating officers. Vicky's case has also unintentionally put an end to his father's political career, which he continues to try to advance even after his son's passing.

In The Great Indian Murder, Sudha and Suraj use their investigations to tell a story that examines various accounts of a single murder. In the film The Great Indian Murder, Richa Chadda portrays DCP Sudha Bhardwaj and Pratik Gandhi a CBI agent.
