Ali Abbas Zafar's 2016 Bollywood sports drama film Sultan is in the Hindi language. Salman Khan plays the titular role in the Aditya Chopra-produced movie, which also stars Anushka Sharma. Randeep Hooda, Amit Sadh, Karmveer Choudhary, and Kumud Mishra are featured as well. The main character of the movie is Sultan Ali Khan, a fictitious Haryana-born Pehlwan and former champion whose prosperous professional life has torn apart his personal relationships.
The story takes place in the little village of Rewari, Haryana where Sultan Ali Khan, a middle-aged regional wrestler and former champion, leads a lonely life. The father of Aakash Oberoi, the creator of a private MMA league supported by Mr. Patel, encourages Sultan's recruitment in an effort to revive the league's popularity. After arriving in Haryana, he makes the recruitment offer to Sultan, who politely declines and declares that he has given up wrestling altogether. Aakash meets Sultan's close buddy Govind to find out the cause of his retirement. Govind tells Aakash about Sultan's early career.
Aarfa Hussain, a state-level wrestler and the child of a regional wrestling coach, captured Sultan's heart in 2008. Despite her initial icy attitude, she eventually welcomes Sultan as a friend. She criticises him, stating she would only wed a skilled wrestler when he says they are engaged. Sultan devotes himself to rigorous training in an effort to earn Aarfa's respect. He eventually triumphs in a state-level wrestling competition. The couple marries and goes on to compete internationally for India as professional wrestlers.
Aarfa learns she is pregnant after the two are chosen for the Olympic team. She abandons her childhood ambition to help India win an Olympic gold medal, which Sultan subsequently does. Sultan's success surprises her by making him haughty, and he smacks a journalist at an event. He also leaves Aarfa as she approaches her due date to win a medal in Turkey. When he gets home, he discovers that his infant son had passed away from acute anaemia. The newborn lacked a donor since Sultan, who has a rare O- blood type, was not there to donate his blood. Aarfa chooses to walk away from Sultan and move in with her father out of rage. Sultan, who is grieving the loss of his wife and child, raises money to establish a blood bank in his son's honour.
Aakash assures Sultan that the championship's winnings will enable him to realise his lifelong ambition of founding a blood bank in the present. Sultan accepts the challenge and makes the trip to Delhi to train. There, Aakash introduces Sultan to MMA coach Fateh Singh, who at first rejects him but eventually accepts him after observing Sultan's tenacity. After two months of preparation, Sultan regains his physical form and masters freestyle wrestling. Sultan uses his recognisable wrestling technique to win his first battle. He quickly becomes a household name after triumphing in several contests and obtaining Aarfa's backing.
Sultan defeats Tyron Woodley in the semi-final round but sustains serious injuries that require hospitalisation. Sultan shouldn't engage in combat again, the doctor advises Aakash, lest his wounds prove fatal. When Aarfa shows up in the ward, he is inspired to keep fighting. Sultan battles through his agony to defeat his opponent in the championship game and take home the trophy. Sultan reunites with his wife, uses the winnings to start a blood bank, and Aarfa returns to the ring. She gives birth to a baby daughter a few years later, and Sultan starts wrestling training her.
Sultan was a critical and commercial success, with the critics praising Salman and Anushka's performance. Randeep Hooda's performance was termed as one of his best in recent years. It was a box office success, earning a gross total of around INR 623 Crores, making it one of the highest-grossing Bollywood movies of all time.
