A 2020 Hindi-language biographical drama film titled Shakuntala Devi follows the life of mathematician and author Shakuntala Devi, also referred to as the "human computer." Produced by Sony Pictures Networks India, Abundantia Entertainment, and Genius Films, it was written and directed by Anu Menon. In addition to Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh, Komal Chhabria, Prakash Belawadi, and Jisshu Sengupta playing supporting roles, the movie also stars Vidya Balan as Shakuntala Devi in the title role.
Anupama Banerjee and her husband Ajay arrive in London at the beginning of the movie in 2001, and Anupama explains that she will be suing Shakuntala Devi.
The story then jumps to Shakuntala Devi's early years in Bengaluru in the 1930s, and her family first learns of her extraordinary gift for mentally solving challenging mathematics problems. Shakuntala's father, Bishaw, decides to make use of her skill by having her perform "math shows" in which she would dazzle audiences with her aptitude for solving mathematical problems. Shakuntala continues to perform in math competitions and earn money for the family as she gets older, but she accuses her father of depriving her of a typical childhood. She also holds her mother accountable for failing to oppose him, particularly after her sister's passing.
She departs for London in 1954 following a severe argument with her lover, Dhiraj, after discovering that he's been acting as though he loved her despite having a marriage planned and having the invitations printed. Shakuntala struggles to find possibilities for her concerts while residing with Tarabai and three other Indian guys in London. But when she displays her abilities at the Royal Mathematical Society in London, she eventually succeeds in impressing Javier, a Spanish mathematician. He assists Shakuntala in getting concerts, helps her with her English, and the two start dating. After Shakuntala successfully refutes a computer on a television programme, her fame soars and she earns the moniker "The Human Computer." By giving performances abroad, she increases her global reach and establishes herself as a global celebrity. In the midst of everything, Javier declares that he must return to Spain and breaks his relationship with Shakuntala.
Shakuntala and Paritosh Banerji first cross paths in Mumbai in 1968, and they fall in love right away. The pair finally marries, makes their home in Kolkata, and plans to have a family. Shakuntala gets pregnant with Anupama, also known as Anu, in 1970 and dedicates the entire time being a parent. She decides to pursue her career after realising how much she loves performing on stage, deciding to leave Anu with Paritosh. Despite the fact that Shakuntala never ceases to wow people and even gets it into The Guinness Book of Records, she is still concerned about being a heartless mother. To Paritosh's dismay, she ultimately chooses to take Anu with her on her journey. They quickly divorce.
Anu traverses the globe alongside her mother while she is growing up. Anu feels unappreciated and dissatisfied with her lifestyle as Shakuntala is continuously pursuing work opportunities. Shakuntala makes every effort to bring Anu along, even after placing her in a boarding school. When a young Anu bursts out at her mother for prioritising her profession above her childhood, this approaches a rock bottom. Shakuntala responds by taking a break and moving in with Anu in London, even endorsing her entrepreneurial goals. This fosters their friendship. When Anu, now an adult, decides to wed businessman Ajay Abhaya Kumar, their relationship suffers once more.
Despite the fact that Ajay is settled in Bengaluru, Shakuntala lets him know that she expects him to move to London with them. Anu charges her mother of continually restricting her freedom and preventing her from leading a full life. Shakuntala threatens to close Anu's business since she can't bear to see her daughter leave. Anu marries Ajay and stops speaking to Shakuntala. She decides against having children since she believes she wouldn't be a decent mother. Amritha, Anu's daughter, is born despite everything.
When Shakuntala uses her power of attorney to liquidate Anu's commercial assets while giving herself 0% of the profit share, Anu and Ajay are taken aback. She also transferred Anu's responsibility for paying the capital gains tax, leaving her family deeply in debt. Shakuntala is the target of Anu and Ajay's decision to file a lawsuit, and they will appear in court in London. When they get there, they learn that Shakuntala's acts were a ruse to get her daughter to visit her. Shakuntala asks Anu for forgiveness before giving her the proceeds from the sale of her estates. After Anu forgave her mother, they had a touching reunion.
The film was appreciated by critics and audiences alike, with everyone praising Vidya Balan's performance and the conviction with which she plays the role of the legendary Shakuntala Devi. The film was also praised for its direction, screenplay and storytelling and the performances by the supporting cast.
