Vijay Sethupathi plays the lead role in Balaji Tharaneetharan's magic realism comedy Seethakaathi, which was released in Tamil in 2018. This is Vijay Sethupathi's 25th leading role in a movie. Production on the movie commenced in April 2017. When the movie first came out, critics gave it very high marks, but they also criticised its protracted running time. It stars Vijay Sethupathi, Archana, Mouli, Mahendran, Sunil Reddy, Parvati Nair, and Gayathri in important roles.
Veteran theatrical performer Ayya Aadhimoolam prefers to perform in front of live audiences rather than in movies. Ayya is unhappy that his plays now have such a small audience due to movies and other media. Ayya passes away during one of Sujatha's Oonjal acts. Parasuraman, Ayya's helper, and his group resolve to present plays frequently after Ayya passes away.
Parasuraman notices that two performers perform substantially better than usual during the Panjali Sabadham sessions. He witnesses Saravanan, a young actor who is performing above and beyond expectations, bowing to the crowd even when the curtains are drawn. According to Parasuraman, Ayya's soul is still active.
Another person who is watching Saravanan's performance is Thyagu, a director who is on the hunt for a male lead for his upcoming movie. Parasuraman persuades him that Ayya used Saravanan as a front.
In the hopes that Ayya will take action, Thyagu hires Saravanan. Saravanan portrays Ayya in the movie, which succeeds and makes Saravanan a sought-after actor. It is revealed that Ayya took up the role in the movie because he enjoyed the plot. Without Parasuraman's knowledge, who chooses the script for him, Saravanan signs a movie. Ayya's spirit abruptly ceases acting during the director Sundar's shoot, and it is then made known to the public that Ayya had previously been in films with Saravanan in the starring role.
Ayya is approached by a number of producers for their movies, and Parasumaran chooses the scripts for the movies according on their content. Ayya becomes a major superstar in Tamil cinema as a result. Dhanapal, a producer, wants Ayya to play a role in his movie but keeps a secret that he also inserts action and song scenes.
Parasumaran is horrified to learn that Dhanapal was involved in this. Ayya eventually leaves performing permanently as a result of Dhanapal's dishonesty, but Dhanapal, who needs to finish his movie at all costs, puts pressure on Parasumaran and Ayya's family. The Producers' Council filed a complaint and claims that Ayya is a fraudster and never took any action. When the matter is heard in court, Ayya's family is shown a clip from Dhanapal's movie.
Dhanapal claims that they stole his film, but it is shown to the judge as an evidence. The judge notices Dhanapal's acting and asks him to participate in the film, but Dhanapal declines, leading to the conclusion that Ayya participated in the production. The judge comes to the conclusion that a man cannot be separated from his art, that Ayya is there for his art even when he is not physically present. After the dispute is resolved, Ayya's statue is dedicated in front of his theatre. In another instance, a school play is displayed, and the main character makes a protracted bowing motion, suggesting that Ayya's spirit is still present.
