Mahesh Bhatt directed the 1991 Hindi-language romantic thriller movie titled Sadak. Along with Deepak Tijori, Avtar Gill, and Mushtaq Khan in supporting parts, it has Sanjay Dutt, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, and Pooja Bhatt in the key roles. It is one of the greatest movies of 1991. The late Sadashiv Amrapurkar's award-winning portrayal as Maharani, the movie's villain, is also warmly recalled. The American film Taxi Driver from 1976 served as its inspiration. Sadak released on 20 December 1991 and has an IMDb rating of 6.4 out of 10.

A nasty transgender pimp named Maharani owns a brothel. She works with other women, including Chanda and Pooja. Taxi driver Ravi Kishore Verma encounters Pooja before the Maharani purchases her, and his friend Gotya is in love with Chanda. Ravi once saw his sister Roopa jump to her death after receiving an STD diagnosis. She had run away with her lover, who had pushed her into prostitution by selling her to a brothel. Ravi was traumatised and terrified by this horrific event. He develops sleeplessness, has frequent unsettling visions of his sister's passing, and occasionally becomes agitated and angry.

On one of his cab runs, he encounters Inspector Irani, who Ravi is familiar with thanks to a piece written about the officer after he had received a medal. The cop is dropped off at his location by Ravi, who declines to accept payment from him and advises the man to contact him if he ever needs assistance of any form.

During Pooja's unsuccessful attempts to escape the Maharani brothel, Ravi runs across her once more. He borrows Salim Bhai, the owner of his cab, his entire life's savings—a pitiful thirty thousand rupees—and goes out with Pooja for one night while pretending to be her client. He accomplishes this with the aid of a pimp named Gullu and his friend Gotya.

On the other hand, Gotya is kept as collateral per the Maharani's directions in the event that Pooja is not delivered securely. Ravi assures Pooja that he loves her and would continue to return to the brothel every night for her as they go around Bombay and enjoy some romantic time together.

Ravi returns to the brothel the following night after mortgaging the taxi. He receives a reprimand from Maharani, who believes he is either crazy or in love with Pooja because he has repeatedly offered her large quantities of money. She also informs Ravi that he was aware that Ravi had not slept with Pooja when she returned the following morning because he has been in charge of this company for the previous thirty years.

He is only allowed to spend the night with Pooja if he has sex with her in front of her after much arguing and pleadings from Ravi and Gotya. Ravi concurs but stabs Maharani before fleeing with Pooja amid the commotion. Additionally, Gotya seizes Chanda, his girlfriend, and flees. They flee to a remote place, where Gotya and Chanda are blessed by Ravi and Pooja and marry in a temple. All four return and seek safety from Salim Bhai.

Meanwhile, the pimp is discovered and his legs are broken by the Maharani's henchmen. Ravi chooses to speak with Inspector Irani after Salim Bhai encourages Gotya and Ravi to seek police protection. He promises to assist them and requests a certain time for them to meet him in the apartment complex's parking lot. However, when the four get there, the Maharani and her goons are already there and shoot them. Ravi and Pooja manage to escape in Irani's police jeep while Gotya and Chanda are shot as the group of four tries to flee. When they are in a safe place, he phones Irani and tells him that he will pay dearly for his treachery.

Ravi is beaten and left for dead, but the Maharani later kidnaps Pooja once again. Ravi regains his lost strength when he realises that Pooja and his sister share the same fate. By executing Inspector Irani and setting fire to Maharani's brothel, he battles his way back to Maharani before killing Maharani and saving Pooja. Ravi is in prison for attempting to enforce the law. Pooja and Ravi are reunited once more and for all time after his release from jail.
