Based on the 2006 book of the same name by Vikram Chandra, the streaming television series Sacred Games is an Indian neo-noir crime thriller. It was the first Netflix original series created in India, and it was helmed by Phantom Films' Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap. Varun Grover, Smita Singh, and Vasant Nath adapted the book. Motwane, Erik Barmack, and Kelly Luegenbiehl served as the show's executive producers.
The series follows the events that occur after Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan), a disturbed police officer in Mumbai, receives a phone call from mobster Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), telling him to save the city within 25 days.

After Erik Barmack, a vice president at Netflix, asked Motwane to produce Indian content for the service in 2014, Sacred Games got under way. They chose to translate Chandra's book into Hindi. Motwane invited Kashyap to co-direct after the script was finished; Motwane directed the parts with Singh, and Kashyap directed the scenes with Gaitonde.
Motwane's director of photography was Swapnil Sonawane, and Sylvester Fonseca and Aseem Bajaj shot the parts that Kashyap directed. Motwane decreased his involvement to that of a showrunner for the second season, while Neeraj Ghaywan took over as director. The background score was written by Alokananda Dasgupta, and the editor was Aarti Bajaj.
On July 5, 2018, eight episodes of the first season of Sacred Games were made available on Netflix in 191 different countries. More than 20 languages are used as subtitles for the series. Critics largely gave it excellent reviews, praising the writing and acting in particular.
Sartaj Singh is a troubled inspector in the Mumbai Police who looks to the corrupt police department for approval. Ganesh Gaitonde, a reputed criminal leader who has been missing for 16 years, calls him. In 25 days, he orders Sartaj to save the city, setting off a series of events that reaches far into India's underbelly. Anjali Mathur, a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) official, assists Sartaj on his quest while flashbacks reveal Gaitonde's beginnings and how he came to be known as Mumbai's crime boss. The first season follows Sartaj as he looks for hints about Gaitonde's past and learns that Gaitonde and his father had a link.
Gaitonde's tragedy is continued in flashbacks in season two as Sartaj looks for explanations. Sartaj finds an ashram that his father formerly belonged to and learns about their doomsday preparations to usher in a brand-new, peaceful era. Flashbacks show Gaitonde's encounter with Khanna Guruji, his integration into the ashram, and his interactions with them. The RAW officer Kusum Devi Yadav, who seeks to keep Gaitonde's archenemy Suleiman Isa alive so she may arrest and execute Shahid Khan, a dangerous fanatic who turns out to be Sartaj's cousin and harbours a plot (with the ashram) to wipe out India, also explains how Gaitonde was sent to Kenya.
