Sayantan Mukherjee's Ray is a Satyajit Ray-inspired anthology web series in the Hindi language available on Netflix. Vasan Bala, Abhishek Chaubey, and Srijit Mukherji are the series' directors. Ajit Andhare and Viacom18 Studios are in charge of producing it. In addition to Bidita Bag, Radhika Madan, Gavin Methalaka, and Gajraj Rao playing supporting characters, the series stars Manoj Bajpayee, Ali Fazal, Harshvardhan Kapoor, and Kay Kay Menon in the key roles. The series premiered on June 25, 2021.
The series is divided into 4 parts:
1. Forget Me Not: Directed by Srijit Mukherji, it stars Ali Fazal in the lead role of Ipsit Nair, a generational talent who never forgets anything. However, his life turns upside down when he meets a woman who claims that they have met previously but Ipsit has no memory of it. This sends him down a wormhole of self-doubt and existential crisis which makes him doubt everything that he knows and makes him paranoid.
2. Bahrupiya: Directed by Srijit Mukherji, it starts Kay Kay Menon as Indrashish Shah in the lead role. It is about a middle-class salaried employee who gets hold of an ancient prosthetics book given to him by his grandmother. His world takes a dramatic turn when he starts implementing the art of prosthetics in his life.
3. Hungama Hai Kyon Bapra: Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, it stars Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role as Musafir Ali, a popular musician and singer who is on a train ride and comes across Aslam Baig, played by Gajraj Rao, who is a retired wrestler turned sports journalist. Their conversation reopens something from the past which was supposed to be buried forever.
4. Spotlight: Directed by Vasan Bala, it stars Harshvardhan Kapoor as Vikram Arora, a very famous and decorated actor who is known for his particular hairstyle and is going through an existential crisis in his life. His life takes a turn for worse when he meets Didi, played by Radhika Madan, a godlike figure who is a threat to his popularity.
Ray was critically acclaimed for its near-perfect adaptation of Satyajit Ray's short stories. Made as a tribute to Satyajit Ray on his birth anniversary, it was received well by the audiences who commended the splendid acting by all the main cast. It opened doors for an entire generation to explore the filmography of one of the most influential filmmakers to ever grace the Indian Cinema, Satyajit Ray.
