The BJP wins the Gujarat CM elections as a result of the people's and BJP members' cooperation, and Keshubhai Patel is elected as the state's new chief executive. Seeing Modi's ascent to fame and popularity soon makes him feel uneasy. He compels the three men who founded the BJP, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L. K. Advani, and Murli Manohar Joshi, to move Modi to a different location. In his sadness, Modi files his resignation, which is ultimately rejected because of the extensive work he had already done for the party. He was relocated to New Delhi for setting up a shop.
A month before the Gujarat earthquake of 2001, he travelled back from Delhi to Gujarat. He took over from Keshubhai Patel in that role and was selected as the Chief Minister candidate for the next election.
He had to deal with the 2002 Gujarat riots immediately after his election. He requested assistance from the federal government and other state governments but in vain.
