Paatal Lok is an Amazon Prime Video-exclusive Indian Hindi-language neo noir crime thriller online television series directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy. Jaideep Ahlawat, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Bodhisattva Sharma, Swastika Mukherjee, Ishwak Singh, and Abhishek Banerjee appear in the series, which is produced by Anushka Sharma under the production house Clean Slate Filmz. The series is mostly inspired on Tarun Tejpal's 2010 novel The Story of My Assassins, and follows a disillusioned officer who is assigned to the investigation of a botched assassination attempt.

Hathiram Chowdhary is a cynical officer who is assigned to investigate a high-profile crime in the programme. He is drawn into the darker regions of the underworld as he is caught up in the inquiry. Paatal Lok is based on the ancient conceptions of Swarga, Dharti, and Paatal (heaven, earth, and hell), which serve as metaphors for India's many castes and estates, with Paatal (hell) serving as the central theme of the plot, which takes place in East Delhi.

The legendary Indian notions of Swarga, Dharti, and Paatal are figuratively related to socio-economic divides in India. Delhi is utilised as a set for stories, with Lutyens Delhi representing heaven, Vasant Vihar and Noida representing earth, and Jamna Paar in East Delhi representing hell. The story's finale is also based on the Mahabharata's epic narrative of Yudhisthira's dog. Hathiram Chaudhary, on a family trip, discovers a stray dog at a distance and tosses his ice cream to him in the closing minutes. The finale merely implies that Hathi has made his way to "heaven" despite having been neck-deep in hell. The dog serves as an allegory for Hathi's lack of selfishness and righteousness in a world where it's very easy to fall prey to corruption.

The series received rave response from critics and audience alike, who praised its story-telling and gripping narrative which kept them hooked to their seats till the end. It's a perfect series to binge watch and is sure to give you chills down your spine with its realism and action sequences.
