Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and Esha Deol play the key characters in the love drama Na Tum Jaano Na Hum from 2002. Alok Nath, Anang Desai, Ashima Bhalla, and Smita Jaykar play supporting roles. Esha Malhotra is a recent college graduate who is intelligent and enthusiastic. She discovers a letter from a former pupil at her school that matches her own romantic desires. She repeats the phrases written on the note as she makes a song request over the phone to a radio station. Soon later, an unidentified man phones and claims to be the one who wrote the letter and that he would like to meet her sometime because they appear to feel similarly about love and other parts of life. A time and date for their meeting at the radio station are established by the announcer. When the man arrives, all that is waiting for him is a note.

She just provides a post box number in the letter, asking him to write there so they can become friends. Her name and address are not given. The communication starts. Rahul Sharma, a photographer and commercial pilot, is identified as the man. Despite not meeting, exchanging phone numbers, or revealing their names, they still write to one another. When Esha chooses Rahul to be their campaign photographer, fate pulls the two together. Of course, neither she nor him realised that it was her.

Esha's grandfather wants her to be married, so he sets up a meeting between her and flirty womaniser Akshay Kapoor, who also happens to be Rahul's best friend. Esha no longer wants to marry Akshay because she is in love with her pen pal. Akshay, though, has a thing for Esha. Rahul, who is in love, makes plans to meet the person he has been writing letters to. But to to his surprise, he learns it's Esha. Rahul resolves to ignore Esha due of his relationship with Akshay, who is madly in love with her. Esha accepts to marry Akshay since she is unable to reach her unidentified love. The day before the wedding, Rahul departs for Vancouver with the intention of never coming back.

Rahul meets Akshay, who has a son now, four years later in a mall in Canada. Rahul anticipates meeting Esha, but instead runs into Tanya, Akshay's ex-girlfriend who is now his wife. Esha still has feelings for her mystery writer, according to Akshay, therefore he was ultimately unable to marry her. Akshay recognises Rahul as the mystery writer Esha fell in love with as a group of mall employees suddenly enter the building carrying a big photograph of Esha. He exhorts Rahul to return quickly to India so that he might reconcile with Esha.
