In 2020, Raghava Lawrence directed the horror comedy Laxmii, which Tusshar Kapoor and Shabinaa Khan produced. Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani play the key roles in this version of the 2011 Tamil film Kanchana, which also features Ayesha Raza Mishra, Aryan Preet, Rajesh Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Mir Sarwar, and Sharad Kelkar in important parts. The main character of the movie is a man who is taken over by the spirit of a transgender person.
Aasif Ahmed resides with his spouse Rashmi Rajput and nephew Shaan. He disbelieves in ghosts. They are invited to Ratna and Sachin's home, Rashmi's parents, for their silver wedding anniversary. Rashmi's mother is nice to the couple, despite her father's disapproval of them because Rashmi, a Hindu, eloped with Aasif, a Muslim. They meet Deepak and Ashwini, the wife of Rashmi's brother. The grounds next door that are rumoured to be haunted are visited by Aasif and Shaan. He drives cricket stumps into the earth for a game of cricket, and the stumps strike a body that has been buried. Aasif washes the blood off the stumps into the house's lemongrass plant after mistaking it for damp soil.
After that, Ratna, Ashwini, and Deepak all encounter paranormal activity in the home. They confirm there is a spirit among them by following the priest's directions. The same plant Aasif used to wash the blood in, is used to produce lemongrass tea. When he consumes it, the spirit takes control of him, causing him to behave effeminate and go on nighttime killing sprees, alerting everyone in the family but Aasif that something is amiss. He is found to have been kept by three ghosts: a violent transgender woman, a Muslim guy, and a boy with mental disabilities. The primary spirit of Aasif is forced out of his body by an exorcist hired by his family; while imprisoned, the ghost tells her tale.
When Laxman Sharma, alias Laxmii, was a little child, her parents disowned her because she was transgender. She is housed by a compassionate Muslim man named Abdul Chacha who also has a mentally challenged son. Laxmii adopts Geeta, another transgender girl, and works hard to provide for her financially out of regret that she was unable to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor due to her parent's lack of support. When Geeta departs to pursue a medical degree abroad, Laxmii purchases a piece of land on which to build a hospital. Her property is unlawfully taken by the corrupt MLA Girja. Girja and his wife violently kill Abdul Chacha and his kid after Laxmii confronts them in a confrontation, and they bury their bodies in Laxmii's land, which is now next door, along with their three victims. Girja's goons have already been killed by Laxmii when she possessed Aasif.
Aasif is devastated by the injustice for her after hearing her story. He knowingly allows her to control him once more so that she can exact her retaliation. Girja's wife and guards are killed by Laxmi, but Girja seeks safety in a Maa Sherawali shrine that Laxmi cannot access because she is a ghost. However, because he is a human, Aasif can enter and order Laxmii to leave before pulling Girja out by force. When Laxmii comes back, Girja is ultimately killed. Three months later, Aasif had finished building the hospital in accordance with Laxmii's vision. It is made known that Laxmii now functions symbiotically in Aasif's body to assist him when necessary.
