K-pop, or Korean popular music, is a genre of popular music that has its roots in South Korea and is a component of that country's culture.

On top of its roots in traditional Korean music, it incorporates forms and genres from around the world, including pop, hip hop, R&B, experimental, rock, jazz, gospel, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, disco, and classical. In the 2000s, "K-pop" gained popularity.

Gayo was the previous name for South Korean pop music. Although the term "K-pop" can be used broadly to refer to all South Korean popular music or pop music, it is frequently used informally to refer to all Korean music and artists who are connected to the nation's entertainment and idol industry, regardless of genre.

IU, Sulli, PSY, BTS, Blackpink, G-DRagon, Oli London, Amber Liu, Jonghyun, Taeyang, Henry Lau, etc. are currently the most prominent K-pop idols.

The 1990s saw the emergence of modern K-pop "idol" culture as K-pop idol music developed into a subculture with sizable teen and young adult fan bases.

K-pop saw substantial development in 2018 and grew to become a "power player," with a 17.9% increase in income.

According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's "Global Music Report 2019," Korean popular music is now positioned at number six among the top ten music markets worldwide, with BTS and Blackpink named as performers driving the industry growth.

K-pop had a record-breaking year in 2020, expanding by 44.8% and taking the top spot among the year's fastest-growing main markets.
