The 2003 comedy Hungama, which was made by Venus Records & Tapes and directed by Priyadarshan, is in the Hindi language. In addition to Shakti Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav, Tiku Talsania, and Shoma Anand playing supporting roles, the movie stars Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Aftab Shivdasani, and Rimi Sen. It is a remake of Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, a 1984 Malayalam film directed by Priyadarshan, which was itself based on Gopal Rao Gari Ammayi, a 1980 Telugu film. Additionally, it was rumoured that The Strange Gentleman, a play by Charles Dickens, served as inspiration for several plot points.
The story begins when Anjali Patekar arrives in Mumbai in search of employment. By pretending to be married to a stranger, aspiring musician Nandu Apte, she is able to live cheaply. Just recently, Jitendra "Jeetu" Sahai launched his own electronics company. His friend Anil Singh connives with his servant Pandu to pose as the son of billionaire businessman Radhe Shyam Tiwari in order to dupe Kachra Seth into hastily getting engaged to his daughter Madhuri. Radhe Shyam Tiwari, who lives in a rural area with his wife Anjali Tiwari, relocates to the city at the same time. Anil is asked to flee by Pandu after learning about Radhe's presence.
Anjali visits Radhe's villa in search of employment. Now, Jeetu arrives at the villa to install the stereo he just sold to Radhe. He misidentifies Anjali as Radhe's daughter when he sees her at the door. Anjali later runs across Jeetu when she applies for a position at his store after being unsuccessful in getting a job at the Radhe's. Anjali is quickly hired by Jeetu, who is already attempting to win her over by thinking she is Radhe's daughter. Anjali keeps up the masquerade out of concern for her employment.
Anjali is dropped off at Radhe's villa every day after work by Jeetu, who thinks Radhe resides there; Anjali then exits the villa. Jeetu routinely visits Tiwari's villa looking for Anjali, while Mrs. Tiwari frequently sees the real Anjali outside the villa, leading the Tiwaris to believe that each is having an affair with their younger counterparts.
Nandu has started to develop feelings for his roommate Anjali. The wife of Nandu's landlord has developed feelings for him and is pressing him to elope with her. After a misunderstanding, Jeetu assumes that Anjali loves him. Meanwhile Raja, her village landlord's son arrives in the city to marry her but he is scared away by Nandu.
Following a large battle in a warehouse, all the main characters begin chasing after one another. In order to put an end to the commotion, Jeetu and Nandu confront Anjali and declare their love for her, making her choose between the two of them. Anjali selects Nandu and the movie finishes with Jeetu wishing them luck.
A sequel to this very famous movie came out in 2021 by the name Hungama 2 starring Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty, Komal Sharma and Meezaan Jaaferi in the lead roles. The movie did average business.
