Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed the 1999 Hindi-language romantic drama movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Straight From the Heart was the international name given to the release. Along with Smita Jaykar, Vikram Gokhale, Vinay Pathak, and Sheeba Chaddha playing supporting parts, the movie stars Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Aishwarya Rai in the key roles. The drama Shetal ne Kathe by Rashtriyashayar Jhaverchand Meghani, on which the movie is based, tells the tale of a newlywed man who learns that his wife is in love with another man and decides to bring the two together.
Pundit Darbar, a well-known supporter of Indian classical music, is the father of Nandini. A young guy named Sameer will be staying with the Darbar family, it is stated, in order to learn the nuances of Indian classical music from the Pundit. He is allowed to stay in Nandini's room, which causes her to move and makes her loathe Sameer. The two initially taunt and prank one another, but they soon develop a strong love for one another. The two have intimate moments at a number of family celebrations, such as weddings and festivals.
The Pundit one day witnesses the couple practising their wedding vows. The elderly father is furious since he has organised Nandini's marriage to the young lawyer Vanraj, who fell in love with her at the wedding of her cousin Anu. The Pundit stops singing because he thinks Nandini has brought shame to the family, and Sameer is expelled from the home. Sameer is forced to make a promise to meet Nandini once more. Although he initially agrees and departs for Italy, he quickly begins writing letters to Nandini pleading with her to come along, but they are not read by her. Having failed at suicide, Nandini grudgingly marries Vanraj. On the night of their wedding, he tries to consummate their union, but Nandini is repulsed by his behaviour and treats him coldly. She declines to speak when he requests an explanation.
Sameer sends letters to Nandini, who reads them as Vanraj enters the room. He is furious and decides to give her back to her parents, but quickly understands that since she is in love with another man, it would be best to bring the two together. Vanraj asks his parents for permission, and after they initially object, they accept. When Nandini and Vanraj arrive in Italy, their search for Sameer is fruitless. They are robbed while searching, and Nandini receives gunshot wound to the arm. Nandini is moved by Vanraj's kindness and compassion for her and starts to like him. After finding Sameer eventually through his mother, Vanraj dutifully makes arrangements for their meeting on the evening of Sameer's debut concert.
She apologises to Sameer and lets him know that she now loves Vanraj when they first meet. She realises that Vanraj is her genuine soul mate as she thinks back on the unshakable love and dedication he has shown her throughout their relationship. She no longer possesses the affection for him that Sameer once saw in her. When she accepts his offer to let her return to Vanraj, Sameer is devastated. When she departs, Sameer sobs, and his mother comforts him. She returns to Vanraj and tells him she needs him to survive. They embrace as Vanraj places a mangal sutra around her neck and the movie comes to a close.
