The comedy-drama movie Hichki was released in 2018 under the direction of Siddharth P. Malhotra and was made by Aditya Chopra and Maneesh Sharma for the former's production company, Yash Raj Films. Based on the autobiography Front of the Class by American motivational speaker Brad Cohen, it stars Rani Mukerji in her comeback role as Naina Mathur, a prospective teacher who was turned down by numerous institutions due to her Tourette syndrome before being accepted at her alma mater, St. Notker's School. She is given the responsibility of instructing pupils from a local slum in class 9F, which was established by the Indian government to fulfil a quota for the disadvantaged.
Naina Mathur, a dual-degree holder in science and education, aspires to be a teacher but is frequently turned down because she has Tourette syndrome, a condition that causes her to make involuntary noises akin to hiccups. Her father Prabhakar sees minimal promise in the notion and wants her to pursue a banking career, but her mother Sudha and younger brother Vinay back her despite the fact that she has failed for five years. Eventually, Naina is given the chance to teach class 9F at St. Notker's School. However, after she is officially hired as a teacher, she discovers that the school was in a rush to find a replacement for 9F because all previous instructors had struggled to maintain control of the class.
The students, according to Naina, are disruptive, misbehaving, and blatantly distinct. The 9F students were admitted to the school to fulfil the government-mandated quota for the poor and disadvantaged after a prior municipality school on the St. Notker's football field was forced to close due to rising maintenance costs, according to Shyamlal, the school's peon. The students come from a nearby slum.
Naina's students imitate her and make fun of her on her first day. In an effort to demonstrate her resiliency, she chooses to teach them interactively. She is played with by the kids using liquid nitrogen, which explodes and breaks the windows. By stating that the prank requires forethought and that if that can be directed, the class had potential, Naina averts a mass expulsion. The 9A students' instructor, Wadia, doesn't like the 9F students. She maintains that her pupils will also receive prefect badges despite his claim that his class is made up of prefects who are academically good. 9A will be in charge of the school's yearly science fair project. Naina also encourages her students to recognise their unique skills and to be courageous in their pursuit of knowledge. Aatish, the lone pupil who still has no affection for Naina, undermines 9A's idea. When Wadia learns about this, the principal chooses to expel 9F. Once more, Naina tries to stop it by assuring them that they would pass their examinations, but she is powerless to stop their suspension from class until then. She informs them they have destroyed her endeavour to assist them, feeling defeated.
All of the 9F pupils diligently studied, and Aatish decided to apologise to Naina after being teased by the other 9F students. Then, in order for Aatish to cheat, Shyamlal gives them copies of the exam questions. His peers reject them when he offers them to them, and he gives up on the idea as well. When Shyamlal admits to the scheme after the exam days, they pass but are accused of cheating, and the principal decides to rusticate them during the prefect-pinning ceremony. Wadia understands that 9F did not cheat when Akshay discloses to him that it was he who had paid off Shyamlal to give copies of the incorrect question paper to 9F.
At the celebration, Wadia confesses that he unjustly attempted to fail the children, praises Naina's instruction, and asks her to affix the prefect badges to her top-scoring pupils. The movie concludes with Naina's final day at the school, when she retires as the principal after 25 years of service, and her former 9F students, who are all now successful, come to visit her.
Hichki received mixed reviews from the critics, criticising the predictability of the plot but also praising Rani Mukerji's performance. It was a box office success, earning close to INR 215 crores and was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2018. It also stars Asif Basara, Naisha Khanna, Sachin Pilgaonkar and Hussain Dala, among others, in supporting roles.
