Poor Bhakti (played by Krishna Gokani) lives in a picturesque Gujarati village close to Ahmedabad. Her mother Gayatri passed away while giving birth to Bhakti, and Bhakti's father Hasmukh refused to look at her or acknowledge her beauty, therefore everyone views her as unlucky. Kashiben, the maternal grandmother of Bhakti, is solely responsible for raising her. 

Devkiben, an elderly widowed woman who lives in Ahemadabad, is the matriarch of the wealthy and well-liked Nanavati family, which consists of her six sons and five daughters-in-law. The family's older daughters-in-law want Devkiben's youngest son Mohan (Madhav Deochake) to wed a woman who will demand everything from the family and behave like an overlord. 

When Bhakti's future senior sisters-in-law (jethanis) see her in Ahemadabad and fall in love with her because of her educated, trusting, and compassionate personality, they decide to make her their sister-in-law.
