Anurag Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri co-wrote the script for the 2012 Indian Hindi-language crime action thriller Gangs of Wasseypur: Part 1. It is the first movie in the Gangs of Wasseypur series, which focuses on the Dhanbad coal mafia and the political rivalries, retaliation, and power struggles that existed between three crime groups between 1941 and the mid-1990s.

The film was actually released in Cannes in May 2012 however the film was made available to the public with the theatrical release on the 22nd of June 2012.

The film wasn't intended to be a two-part series instead it is a 5-hour long movie however since in the country five-hour movie screens aren't available the film is divided into two parts.
