In 2013, Mrighdeep Singh Lamba released the comedy film Fukrey, which was produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. It has Ashraful Haque, V K Sharma, Mehak Manwani, and Bhupesh Rai in supporting roles along with Pulkit Samrat, Manjot Singh, Varun Sharma, Ali Fazal, Priya Anand, Vishakha Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, and Richa Chadda in the key parts.
The story centres on Delhi-based school students Vikas "Hunny" Gulati and Dilip "Choocha" Singh, who always dream of becoming successful. They wish to enrol at the nearby college but lack the necessary grades. Pandit, the campus security guard, offers to sell them the stolen class XII exam papers for a high price. Choocha has the divine ability to get the winning lottery number in his dreams, while Hunny has the skill to extract the precise number from a dream. Since they could not manage or gather the necessary funds, they planned to sell the exam papers to other pupils but flopped there as well.
Meanwhile, they get to know struggling musician and former college student Zafar through Pandit. Lali is the fourth person, and Billa, his father, owns a sweet shop. Like Hunny and Choocha, Lali is presently pursuing his degree via correspondence, and he also hopes to enrol in the same college where his lover Shalu, who constantly ignores him, attends. To be admitted, Pandit requires Lali to provide INR 2,50,000 to the college development fund. Lalli begs his parents for the funds, but they decline, claiming the cost of attending college is exorbitant.
Neetu, Zafar's ex-girlfriend who dumped him over his professional decisions, is now giving Lalli private lessons so that he may acquire the grades he needs to go into the university of his choice and to make Shalu envious. Zafar's father just suffered a stroke and is now paralysed; as a result, the struggling musician urgently needs money for his care. Hunny presents his plan to the four when they first meet at Pandit's office. However, they require someone to invest lakhs of rupees because they now need a lot of money collectively. As a result, Pandit leads them to visit the neighbourhood criminal Bholi Punjaban at Zafar's request, where Hunny explains their plan.
The following morning, Choocha recounts a made-up dream, which Hunny decodes and assigns a number to. Going to Bholi, they give the number. Bholi, however, loses her money when it backfires. Now that she wants to get her money back, she offers them a packet of drugs that Zafar, Hunny, and Lali must sell that night at a rave party. She keeps Choocha by her side as protection. When police and narcotics squads raided the party, Lali fled with a package while being pursued by authorities. Lali deceived the police and arrived at Neetu's residence. There, he also sees Zafar. Just before the cops are going to search Neetu's residence, she flushes the drugs down the drain.
The five arrive at Bholi's home the following morning. In order to prevent getting the money by reselling Lali's shop, she offers them 24 hours to pay the entire amount owed. At Zafar's house, where the four are fighting, Choocha confronts them with the reality of not having seen the dream. But he tells them that he slept the night before and had a dream. Lali, Hunny, and Neetu are interested, however, Zafar is not. Even when Neetu is willing to contribute her savings, they still lack money after Hunny interprets the dream. The following morning, though, Lali borrows some cash from a man who used to steal parts from his motorcycle. They stake money, and they profit greatly.
They deliver the cash to Bholi at her home. Then Hunny gives Bholi an advance and informs her that he intends to sell those drugs once more. Bholi is delighted and rushes inside to retrieve the drugs, but the police and Narcotics, who have stormed her home, catch her red-handed. In a flashback, it is revealed that Zafar met with the Narcotics division and devised a strategy to apprehend Bholi while Hunny, Choocha, Lali, and Neetu were making investments. Zafar also called Neetu, Lali, Choocha, and Hunny, who then confessed to the police. With Bholi now in custody, the police release the four and set them to go.
Three months later, it is revealed that Hunny and Choocha have amassed wealth and are riding into the same college as planned on horses. Pandit is astonished to see them, along with Lali getting new girlfriends, and Jealous Shalu is also shocked to see them. While Neetu becomes engaged to Zafar, Priya once more falls for Honey. A good laugh can be heard among Lali, Zafar, Neetu, and Priya.
Fukrey was praised by the critics for its humour and the acting performance by all the cast members. Although it did average business at the box office, earning close to INR 49 crores, it went on to become a fan-favourite and is considered a modern-day cult classic of Hindi cinema.
