A 2016 Hindi-language romance drama film titled Fitoor was produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and directed by Abhishek Kapoor. On Charles Dickens' 1861 book Great Expectations, it is based. Along with Rahul Bhat, Lara Dutta, Jason Shah, and Rochelle Rao, among others, playing significant roles, the movie stars Tabu, Katrina Kaif, and Aditya Roy Kapur in key roles.
Thirteen-year-old Noor, a Kashmiri kid from a middle-class household, befriends Firdaus, the daughter of a wealthy elite family in Kashmir who works for him and develops a strong romantic attachment to her. Begum Hazrat Jahaan, the mother of Firdaus, was abandoned when she was a young girl and disapproves of Noor's views toward his poor social standing. Despite this, Noor and Firdaus become closer until Hazrat insults Noor as she breaks the news that Firdaus will be attending school abroad.
Years later, Noor moves to Delhi after being awarded a renowned art scholarship and runs across Firdaus once more. She is now engaged to Pakistani diplomat Bilal, but Noor's sentiments remain the same, and they start dating nonetheless. Despite their initial disagreements, Hazrat gradually comes to realise her error. However, she is still adamant that Firdaus marry Bilal and forces her against her will. Hazrat's boyfriend Mufti abandoned her while she was pregnant and fled with all of her jewels, which is why she requested Firdaus marry Bilal and let go of her love, is shown in a flashback.
Noor travels to London for an art exhibition and learns that the fellowship was provided by Moazam, a terrorist he once saved from certain death, rather than Hazrat as he initially believed. Noor confronts Hazrat in London and learns that she has been using him as a pawn in Moazam's game. She also lashes out in anger at Noor's old boyfriend Mufti, which leads Noor to realise that she has been trying to atone for her wrongdoing by shattering his heart. Noor returns to the exhibition and destroys his piece that was dedicated to Firdaus' memory.
Another flashback depicts Hazrat losing her child and Firdaus becoming her adopted daughter. She commits suicide after waking up inconsolable. When a mourning Firdaus finds Mufti's photo in her pendant alongside Hazrat's during her funeral, she understands that she will never be able to move on from her love for Noor. Firdaus decides to leave Bilal and rejoin Noor after coming to this knowledge.
