The study and appraisal of motion pictures   and the film medium is known as film criticism. In general, there are two types of film criticism: journalistic critique, which frequently appears in newspapers, magazines, and other forms of popular mass media, and academic criticism, which is produced by cinema scholars and is published in scholarly publications.

Academic film criticism almost never takes the form of a review; instead, it is more likely to analyze the movie and examine where it fits within the history of its genre or the entire canon of movies.

The professionals who do the job of presenting the analysis of a film are called Film Critics.

Academic criticism also referred to as film theory or film studies, investigates cinema in greater depth than journalistic film reviews.

These critics attempt to investigate the reasons behind a film's success, its aesthetic or political merits, its significance, and its impact on viewers. Rather than write for mass-market publications their articles are usually published in scholarly journals and texts which tend to be affiliated with university presses, or sometimes in up-market magazines.

Film critics received an average yearly compensation of $63,474 as of 2021.

André Bazin, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Kristin Thompson, David Bordwell, and Sergei Eisenstein are a few well-known academic cinema reviewers. A few Indian names in this list involve Rajiv Masand and Sucharita Tyagi.
