Sanjay Dutt, Chandrachur Singh, and Mahima Chaudhry play the key characters in Raj Kanwar's 1999 Indian action movie Daag: The Fire, which also stars Shakti Kapoor, Raj Babbar, Sachin Khedekar, Shivaji Satam, and Johnny Lever in supporting parts.

In the plot, a former Indian soldier named Karan Singh seeks retribution for his honourable father Satya Prakash Singh, who was wrongfully imprisoned after being falsely charged and prosecuted by a cunning attorney named Ravi Verma, who has the support of his father-in-law Singhal.

Kajal, the wife of unscrupulous attorney Ravi, who can win practically any case, is Singhal's daughter. He unjustly charges and convicts a virtuous man during a court proceeding of corruption, and as a result, he ends his life in shame. One day after a gathering that Kajal and Ravi went to, his son, major Karan, swears retribution and fires a gun directly at Ravi. However, his wife, Kajal, intervenes to defend her husband by using her body as a shield. When Karan fires again, Ravi is hit in the spinal cord and suffers partial memory loss; as a result, the physicians label him as having "retrograde amnesia."

Kajal passes away in the hospital after succumbing to her injuries. Singhal asks a street woman named Kajri, who resembles Kajal perfectly, to temporarily pose as Ravi's wife in an effort to assist Ravi to regain his memory.

However, stubborn Karan continues to seek retribution by pursuing Ravi in the hospital and comes up with a plan to assassinate Ravi. All the evidence that demonstrates Karan's father's innocence is gathered by Karan and Kajri. Ravi begins to remember things and feel sorry for Karan. He makes a promise to Karan that with Kajri's assistance, once he is fully recovered, he will give all the evidence to the court to show that Karan's father was wrongfully accused but actually innocent. When Singhal learns of this development, he twists the tables on Ravi.

Singhal and Ravi get into a heated family dispute. The real criminals are finally arrested after Ravi wins the final court case with Karan's assistance. Finally reunited in happiness, Ravi and Kajri turn themselves into the police, and Karan does the same.
